5.0 out of 5 stars `Coconut Rock' is the latest album showcasing the musical brilliance of Ocote Soul Sounds & Adrian Quesada, July 27, 2009
This review is from: Coconut Rock (Dig) (Audio CD)
Band leaders Adrian Quesada of Grupo Fantasma and Martin Perna of Antibalas have teamed up once again for another album from their band known as Ocote Soul Sounds.

The group teamed up in 2005 with "El Nino Y El Sol" and within the four year span, the band has evolved into a seven piece ensemble with a total of three albums released.

Their third album (which will be released on Aug. 24th) titled "Coconut Rock" features a song that emphasizes the group's Latin music but with grooves that include psychedelic afro-latin funk groove to Latin breakbeat rhythms.

Musical track which standouts on the album including the opening track "Vendendo Saude E Fe" featuring the group showcasing the beautiful vocals of Brazilian songstress Tita Lima. While the first track is sensual and smooth, the second track "Vampires" showcases the band's appreciation of the funk-groove music that they are known for. Percussion and brass horns are quite dominant in this track alone.

The third track "Tu Fin, Mi Comienzo" is just catchy, addictive and a song that inspires one to just stand up and dance. One of my favorite tracks on the album that I have on replay.

The fourth track "Tres Ratas" showcases the organ with an underlying groove, while the fifth track "The Revolt of the Cockroach Peoples" exhibits some of that old school funk, B-boy style of sound with the brass horns. The song is in honor of a famous book about the Chicano Moratorium in Los Angeles and Civil Rights movement and dedicated to the people who were part of the struggle.

The sixth track "Return of the Freak" has that smooth and sensual groove while the seventh track "Prince of Peace" is an upbeat track that sports various brass horns in tandem with the percussion.

The eighth track "Pan, Chamba y Techo" sports a full on vocal track that showcases that old school funk vibe. While the ninth track "El Diablo y El Nau Nau" is derived from Cuban children's rhymes about the boogyman.

The final two tracks features "Coconut Rock" that showcases deep Afro beats and overall a mesmerizing track, while "Cara De Yo No Fui" is just all out funky.

What you hear on this album, is what you pretty much hear when the band plays live. I was really impressed by the overall album. Just a talented and energetic group of musicians!

Mesmerizing and soulful, `Coconut Rock' is the latest album showcasing the musical brilliance of Ocote Soul Sounds & Adrian Quesada. Funky brass, Afro Beat in conjunction with modern and old school grooves with a touch of energy and musical vibrancy.

"Coconut Rock" is definitely an enjoyable album!
