5.0 out of 5 stars As good as the original and that's high praise
See my review of the original "Cocoon." Much the same can be said for this sequel. As another reviewer commented, the hospital scene between Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy is very touching. There is good belly laugh material too, for example when the oldsters take on some arrogant young basketball hotshots. I want to say a word for the soundtrack, too, the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Worthy effort.
The orininal is by far better, and this new one at times allows (dare I say!) mediocrity to set in. But for a sequal, this is pretty good. This time, the familiar alien group returns to earth to save a fellow extraterrestrial , who has been captured by the St. Petersburg Oceanograpic Institute (or somethin' like that). Which also gives time for the good old group of...

Lovely themes, well done and well integrated. This film and the original are good jobs all around and leave one (at least me) with a warm glow.

4.0 out of 5 stars Growing Old Is Not For Sissies, September 5, 2003
By

(REAL NAME)
In this sequel most of the main members of the cast from COCOON return on a visit to their old retirement community in St. Petersburg, Florida after an absence of five years. Their extraterrestrial hosts provide the transportation as they have to return to earth to rescue another one of their comrades left behind on an earlier trip. This means that not only are Don Ameche, Wilfred Brimley, Hume Cronyn, Maureen Stapleton, Jessica Tandy and Gwen Verdon back but also Brian Dennehy , Tawnee Welch and Tyrone Power, Jr. from the original spaceship crew as well as the skipper of the glass bottom boat (Steve Guttenberg) and crusty old Jack Gifford. The big question on this trip is mostly about who will elect to stay on earth and who will decide to go back to eternal bliss. That is not an easy decision to make and we all probably have some experience wrestling with the same question.

For those who are curious about whatever happened to the initial voyagers this movie will be satisfying even though it gets a little heavy at times. There are some memorable scenes especially a few involving Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, Jack Guttenberg and Tawnee Welch. Daniel Petrie is the new director in place of Ron Howard.

It still manages to drag a few tears out of you. Still a good science fiction movie saga.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cocoon2 - The Return, August 9, 2005
This review is from: Cocoon - The Return (DVD)
A great sequel to the first Cocoon. Same characters but now we learn how things have gone for them in space and also those who remained at home. Those who went away now understand how they are cut off from relatives left at home. This leads to some who elect to stay behind when its time to return to space. Again, laughter and joyful living!

5.0 out of 5 stars Different from the original, but still a great movie, May 27, 2000

It's hard to believe that "Cocoon 2 - The Return" isn't more popular. The main cast from the original "Cocoon" return to earth and plan to visit for a few days. While the main cast is visiting with their family and friends, some oceanographers find a cocoon in an ocean and take it back to research it in the labs. Once the others that are here visiting find out, they pledge to save it before they leave.

While they're here on earth, they try to set Bernie up with a new woman, even though his dead wife, Rose, is still on his mind all the time. More than half of the ones that came back to earth decide to stay at the end of the movie. Alma Finley finds out she has a liking for taking care of kids while her husband, Joe, is out enjoying himself with the other guys. She gets hit by a car trying to save one of the kids from being hit, and ends up in the hospital on the verge of death. The doctor tells Mr. Finley that she probably won't make it through the night. That's when the most memorable scene from the movie takes place. Mr. Finley goes in there and with the help of some good special effects, sacrifices his life for his wife to live and take the job with the kids like she wanted to.

Ben Luckett gets closer to his grandson by teaching him how to hit a baseball and to not listen to the other people telling him he can't do it, but to tell himself that he can. Ben's wife, Mary also doesn't want to go away from earth again.

While "Cocoon 2 - The Return" might not be as funny or original as the first "Cocoon," it does have a few funny parts and succeeds in other ways. It's a lot more of a heartwarming movie than it is a comedy and it's pretty much a laidback version of the original "Cocoon." If you liked the original, I would definitely recommend getting "Cocoon 2 - The Return." Even if you didn't like the original, give this one a chance because it is a good movie.

Got this so we could follow the story. It was fun watching but felt it did not have the zip of the original movie. It is great to see older actors/actresses in movies that can really act and tell a story and not just get by their youthful looks that is so prevalent these days.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cocoon The Return- great sequel, December 7, 2008
This review is from: Cocoon - The Return (DVD)
After seeing Cocoon and finding out there is a sequel I wanted to check this one out. Normally, I find sequels are never as good as the originals but in some ways this is just as good and even better. It works because all of the original cast is back- Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn, Don Ameche and the whole gang. They come back to earth and visit family and friends because some scientists from the oceanography insitute capture one of the aliens and they have to get him back. Some of the memorable plots are when Bernie is set up with a woman as he struggles to deal with losing Rose. In some ways it is funny and quite poignant as he deals with his new romance. The scene that gets a lot of laughs is when the men take on some young, arrogant guys in a game of basketball. The most memorable scene in the movie is between Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. She takes a job taking care of children and when one runs out into the street she pushes him out of the way when she realizes he is about to be hit by a car and is hit instead. The scene at the hospital were Joe (Cronyn) sacrifices his life to save Alma (Tandy) makes me cry. It is so moving and touching! Not to spoil the movie but some of the gang stay and others leave. A very good little gem of a movie with a lot of heart!
