Editorial Reviews

In this charming, funny and very moving sequel to the hit film "Cocoon," the adventurous old-timers who left Earth for the alien utopia Antarea, return on a rescue mission. Although accustomed to their new peaceful, problem-free planet, they realize the joys they left behind after they are reunited with their stunned families. Yet for all their happiness, they must once again confront the human frailties of their past.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as the original and that's high praise October 10, 2000
Format:VHS Tape|Verified Purchase
See my review of the original "Cocoon." Much the same can be said for this sequel. As another reviewer commented, the hospital scene between Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy is very touching. There is good belly laugh material too, for example when the oldsters take on some arrogant young basketball hotshots. I want to say a word for the soundtrack, too, the music. Lovely themes, well done and well integrated. This film and the original are good jobs all around and leave one (at least me) with a warm glow.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worthy effort. December 7, 2001
Format:VHS Tape
The orininal is by far better, and this new one at times allows (dare I say!) mediocrity to set in. But for a sequal, this is pretty good. This time, the familiar alien group returns to earth to save a fellow extraterrestrial , who has been captured by the St. Petersburg Oceanograpic Institute (or somethin' like that). Which also gives time for the good old group of retirees to visit their old friends. The all the elements are back: science fiction, fantasy, drama, and a lot more laughs! It still manages to drag a few tears out of you. Still a good science fiction movie saga.

4.0 out of 5 stars Growing Old Is Not For Sissies September 5, 2003
Format:VHS Tape
In this sequel most of the main members of the cast from COCOON return on a visit to their old retirement community in St. Petersburg, Florida after an absence of five years. Their extraterrestrial hosts provide the transportation as they have to return to earth to rescue another one of their comrades left behind on an earlier trip. This means that not only are Don Ameche, Wilfred Brimley, Hume Cronyn, Maureen Stapleton, Jessica Tandy and Gwen Verdon back but also Brian Dennehy , Tawnee Welch and Tyrone Power, Jr. from the original spaceship crew as well as the skipper of the glass bottom boat (Steve Guttenberg) and crusty old Jack Gifford. The big question on this trip is mostly about who will elect to stay on earth and who will decide to go back to eternal bliss. That is not an easy decision to make and we all probably have some experience wrestling with the same question.
For those who are curious about whatever happened to the initial voyagers this movie will be satisfying even though it gets a little heavy at times. There are some memorable scenes especially a few involving Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, Jack Guttenberg and Tawnee Welch. Daniel Petrie is the new director in place of Ron Howard.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cocoon - The Return March 13, 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Got this so we could follow the story. It was fun watching but felt it did not have the zip of the original movie. It is great to see older actors/actresses in movies that can really act and tell a story and not just get by their youthful looks that is so prevalent these days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cocoon2 - The Return August 9, 2005
Format:DVD
A great sequel to the first Cocoon. Same characters but now we learn how things have gone for them in space and also those who remained at home. Those who went away now understand how they are cut off from relatives left at home. This leads to some who elect to stay behind when its time to return to space. Again, laughter and joyful living!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Memories April 26, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
I recently watched Cocoon the Return again on Amazon Prime Instant Video. The quality was top notch and great HD. Most people would say this sequel was not as good as the original. I agree and disagree. The story was good but for the life of me, I can't imagine coming back to earth when you've been to a place where you never grow old and you never get sick.... Just sayin'. The highlight of the film are the actors who are no longer with us. Gwen Verdon, Don Ameche, Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn, Maureen Stapleton. They were the jewels of early films as well as later hits. And I often wonder if the Ballrooms of Florida are still in operation where you could go and dance to the Big Bands and Swing. What an era and what a wonderful group of people who frequented them.
Cocoon the Return is definitely a movie I would recommend for those who enjoy nostalgia and a really good ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars review of Cocoon- The Return September 3, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This movie gave me closure. I felt somewhat dissatisfied after "The Cocoon" . Don't get me wrong, I loved me but the ending left me hanging. I did not even know there was a sequel until just a couple of weeks ago!! All these years wondering.... Anyway, it was not a completely happy ending but it was real, and I appreciated the loose threads coming together. I will watch these movies again and again.

4.0 out of 5 stars almost as good as the first movie March 12, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
the return has a good plot to it and the cast is great. besides the good laughs there is a very heartwarming scene with Jessica Tandy and her husband Hume Cronyn who she has been married to in real life for many years. Don Ameche is up to his quality of acting as well and the show overall is very enjoyable for the whole family. Good cast plus good storyline equals a good clean movie for the family to enjoy.
