Editorial Reviews

A definite maturing in the band's musical sensibility, execution, vision, & cohesion and a major leap from their previous efforts. Their almost constant touring since "Peel" came out honed their already keen pop breadth and depth to razor sharpness on this offering. It's composed of ballads, some flat out rockers, some somber, almost folky Nick Drake-ish numbers, a pump organ funereal dirge, & of course a few well-crafted catchy pop tunes with the kind of flair that only they can muster. Recorded with Stuart Moxham (Young Marble Giants), Bob Weston (Shellac, Volcano Suns) & by themselves on a four track in their loft.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glad I took a chance on the coctails!, January 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Coctails (Audio CD)
Took a chance on the coctails being a huge SAC fan and looking for new music. Seeing that Archer Prewitt was in this band, I thought why not take a chance. Anyhow I enjoy how the album has a few songs sung by different band memebers. Makes for a nice mix. Also some fine beautiful instrumentals in there. Circles is definitely my favoirte. One of those instrumental songs that warrants many repeat listens. I also like Sun is down quite a lot as well. City sun and low road are personal favorites as well. There is really not any bad songs on here in fact. It's a shame the song last organ started out nice, but halfway through the song seemed to go on autopilot and just became unlistenable. I don't know what the band memebers were thinking on that song. Nevertheless, I have all the coctails albums and this is by far my favorite coctails album. A must listen to album for any sea and cake fan or anyone who likes indie-rock. Did anyone notice that the song "never knew " on here sounds a lot like "didn't want to have to do it" by the lovin' spoonful? Coincidence?

So pick up the album, kick back, and listen to the coctails by the coctails while drinking some well, coctails!

5.0 out of 5 stars Autumnal Perfection, July 4, 2009
This review is from: Coctails (Audio CD)
This is my favorite Coctails record, and I have them all. It's a subtle, beautiful album that reminds me a little of Nick Drake's Pink Moon and anticipates Archer Prewitt's solo career. Yes, this is very different from their earler stuff, but a very worthy disc nonetheless.
