Clicking the “Test drive now” button launches a copy of this app on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), a web service that provides on-demand compute capacity in the cloud for developers. When you interact with the simulated phone using your mouse and keyboard, we send those inputs over the Internet to the app running on Amazon EC2 — just like your mobile device would send a finger tap to the app. Our servers then send the video and audio output from the app back to your computer. All this happens in real time, allowing you to explore the features of the app as if it were running on your mobile device.

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD, NO PERMISSIONS January 6, 2013
By Jeanne

Just played a couple rounds, right after it showed up as today's Amazon free app of the day. I played the easy & medium levels, they worked fine. I had a bit of a challenge getting the colors I wanted to guess into the right spots, but it's late, so maybe that's me. The game is the same as the old school game Mastermind, which I like for quick games. If you like Mastermind, you'll like this game, though I wouldn't pay over $1 for this simple game (no idea what this app sells for, I downloaded it while free too quickly to check). I never play games with the volume on, so no idea if there are sounds in this app or not. I would prefer some settings for chosing if the game can repeat colors or not in the same puzzle, and/or have empty spots, but still it's a simple game that works fine as-is. Best news: no ads or permissions for this app!!! I have an HTC EVO 3D, running I.C.S.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for my Kindle September 19, 2012

This version gives you three levels of difficulty. The hardest having five spots for pegs and 8 colors to guess from. I am a huge fan of the Mastermind board game and thrilled with the electronic version. Not having to manipulate the little pegs in and out of the tiny little holes makes it much better. Plus being able to play against the computer means I can play all night. I do wish there was an option for a second player, my son likes to play this game with me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but with touch screen inaccuracies. January 7, 2013
Verified Purchase
This is a fun, classic game, and it seems to be executed well. But on my Galaxy Tab 2, I had lots of problems with the incorrect empty spot being selected when I touched the screen. I don't have this problem elsewhere, so can only assume it's an issue with the app itself.

I just played this is a little so far, and it was free when I downloaded it. as other reviewers have said, there is something wrong with the clicking/alignment (on my kindle fire hd) so I often have to click twice to get what i want.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good start (updated) January 6, 2013

I love Mastermind, and this app does a decent job of replicating the board game. There are three levels of difficulty where you have to solve 3, 4, or 5 pegs. It's very straightforward.

I didn't know whether to give this app 3 or 4 stars. It is fun to play and I definitely recommend getting it as the free app of the day. However, there are some issues that I would like to see the developer improve upon before I rate this app higher and recommend people to pay money for it.

The problem with the app is that it seems very amateurish. The animations are poor and the menus are awful. Also, there is no sound. Improving these would earn 4 stars. But to earn 5 stars, the developer needs to include new and creative modes, especially ones that allow for multiplayer.

Overall, though, I'm pleased enough with the app as a time waster and recommend it as the free app of the day.

UPDATE: I have increased my rating to 4 stars due to the developer improving the game. It's not perfect, but it's still good and enjoyable. I would highly recommend it for anyone who enjoyed Mastermind as a kid

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Logic Game January 7, 2013
Verified Purchase
Each game there is a hidden 3, 4 or 5 color code that is hidden. You then have 9 chances to figure it out. How? Select your colors (tap the pegs) and "place" them (again by tap) in the first row. The game tells you if you have the right color in the wrong spot (white dot) or the right color in the right spot (black dot) or the wrong color in any spot (empty dot.) By process of elimination you try different color combinations to solve the hidden code in the allowed chances. As far as a game goes this is very simple but can be challenging.

On to presentation. The first thing I noticed when I started it up is that you have to tap each screen to move past it. There was no automation. Each screen is a bland background with tap (no dragging or animation). No sound. All this to say it's very bare bones and basic.

Because there are no permissions needed and because the game play is fun this is worth a download even with the poor presentation.

UPDATE: The developers have updated the presentation and now it is much better. The screen progress on their own (no more tapping), the graphics look slighly better, and there is a help section now. I already rated this a 4, so it's a very good game and now the presentation is more in line with what you'd expect on a puzzle game. Hi Res graphics and smoother automation (like when the colored pegs get covered at the start of the match), music, and the ability to drag the pegs would boost this up.

Every now and then I like loading Code Breaker up and challenging myself to find the right color combo. It's a very simple game, but it does what it does well.
