5.0 out of 5 stars Love this song!, January 17, 2011
This review is from: Code Monkey (MP3 Download)
I discovered this song through the show Code Monkeys (which is awesome BTW- if you haven't seen it then go get it on Netflix on demand).

I'm incredibly addicted to this song, which is cute, fun, sad, & romantic all at once. The tune is playful but the lyrics really tell a great story about a programmer (who by the way the lyrics are phrased is probably socially inept) who has a horrible job that he only keeps due to his unrequited love for the receptionist. It's great how the song makes you feel a little sad for the guy who still manages to stay upbeat about his chances with his crush.

An awesome song that you really need to download & listen to. It's also very awesome when paired with Conventional Love by Speck.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Nerd Anthem by the Nerd Minstrel, June 7, 2011
This review is from: Code Monkey (MP3 Download)
Like most people, I discovered this song while watching the show Code Monkeys. After I'd seen that whole show, I got a little interested in the song, and looked it up. Even though I loved the show, I can tell you that Jonathan Coulton's song has now become the much more important to me.

I love it for a couple of reasons. First, it is a tremendously catchy song. It's well played and sung, with a great pop-rock chorus.

Second, it's actually sort of a meaningful song, at least to me. I'm not literally a code monkey, but there's not doubt that I'm a nerd, the proverbial nice-guy who comes in last and can't get the pretty receptionist to pay any attention to me, who works hard in a job that's boring and unappreciated. Goodness, I even like to drink Tab and eat Fritos. I'm not the only person like this. So, I just love it for being a good song acknowledging my experience of the world, while being funny and hopeful, too. It's a great song that I've found myself passing along to my nerd friends who love it, too.

If you're one of the two people on this planet that haven't already seen the Code Monkey video, go listen to the full song for free at YouTube or wherever. It's a simple song about a junior programmer smashing his face into the grindstone at the office while harboring a crush on the receptionist.

I found out about Jonathan Coulton, JoCo to his fans, throgh a youTube video of this song using WoW characters. I loved it so much I went looking for his website, and purchased quite a few of his songs. He is a truly talented songwriter, and funny as hell. He's also smart enough to give some of his songs away for free at his website, and all the others are very cheap and totally 100% DRM-free. And guess what? People keep on buying his songs, and he's even doing tours now!. That must terrify the record industry. Oh, and if you loved the ending in the videogame Portal, you will not be disappointed with his music.
