3.0 out of 5 stars the talents
Do you remember the parables of the talents? Jess would hate that one. All she wants to do is bury her talent under a bushel, in a hole, or anything. Or lose it. Whatever, she just wants to be a normal girl and get Rob Wilton to declare his undying love for her. She'll settle for the latter, oh- and get the FBI off her back. Jessica "Jess" Mastriani had finally convinced the FBI, the press, the military and everyone else in the vicinity of southern Indiana that she had lost her psychic powers and could no longer find missing people. Well, sort of. See, Jess knew that she was being followed by the FBI and that they were just waiting for her to accidentally show that she still did have her powers, but Jess had a system. When Jess had the chance to become a camp counselor at Camp Wawasee for the summer with her best friend, Ruth, she jumped at the chance to get the feds away from her house and to escape having to work in one of her family's restaurants for the whole summer. After all, how bad can a camp for musically gifted children be?

Well, with a lame name like Camp Wawasee, Jess should have realized that her summer wasn't going to go the way she planned it. First, they took her Frangipani Cottage away with all of her little female campers who would have adored her and assigned her to Birch Tree Cottage where the little male campers were intent on making her life miserable - especially Shane. Shane was a football player wannabe who was stuck at music camp because that is where his mother wanted him to be. Jess would be just as happy to have him at football camp and she cannot believe that anyone who acts the way he does can play like an angel. She definitely has her hands full trying to keep Shane from picking on the other kids and trying to get him to believe that she really did lose her powers (even though she didn't).

As if Jess didn't have enough problems, Jonathan Herzberg, a desperate father approaches Jess and begs her to find his daughter Keely. Jess refuses and tries to tell him that she doesn't find people anymore, but when he shoves the picture in front of her face, Jess knows that she will wake up the next morning knowing where Keely is whether she wants to or not. She isn't going to make the same mistake as last time though, this time she is going to make sure that Keely wants to be found....

This is the second book in the Lightning Girl series of the 1-800-WHERE-R-U series and it is just as entertaining as the first. Jess is a great lead character who is laugh out loud funny throughout the whole book. The other characters are great, too, but Jess is my favorite. Jess has a knack for getting herself into impossible situations and having to be creative to get out again and so it is always a surprise to see what she will do next. I highly recommend this series - all four of the books in this series (When Lightning Strikes, Code Name Cassandra, Safe House & Sanctuary) are all must reads!

Sixteen-year-old tomboy Jess claims to have lost her amazing ability to find missing children (gained when she was struck by lightning). The FBI is not convinced though, and agents Smith and Johnson are still trailing her. Jess takes a job as a councillor at a summer camp for gifted musical children, and finds herself in charge of a cabinful of very rowdy boys. To make matters worse, one of the teachers at the camp discovers her guilty secret (not her psychic ability, her other guilty secret)Then a distraught father turns up at the camp, begging Jess to find his missing daughter. Jess can't resist helping him, but she needs the assistance of hunky Rob Wilkins, whose girlfriend she would like to be (if only he could overcome his scruples over their age difference). Finding the gilr plunges Jess into real danger though, as she becomes the target for a homicidal maniac. This is an exciting, fun mystery with lots of suspence and humour. Jess is a very likeable heroine, and Rob wilkins is utterly gorgeous (I do hope Jess manges to get him to forget the age difference).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to the series, November 21, 2001

"Code Name Cassandra" is an excellent edition to the 1-800-WHERE-R-U series.

Jess Mastriani is back again for a 2nd installment about her strange life. After being hit by lightning in the last book Jess was able to locate missing children, she was taken to an FBI station and forced to stay there until she escaped. Now everyone thinks she doesn't have her powers anymore. But she has a secret, her psychic ability is still there.

A man approaches Jess as she's working at a summer camp for musically gifted children. He wants her to find his daughter. She'd love to but then the feds will know she still has her powers, but she does what she knows she has to do. Jess is on the case, and now not only does she have the FBI on her trail again, she now has the girls stepfather on her back who wants her dead.

This is an excellent book, and I recommend it to any fan of Jenny Carroll, and fans of paranormal phenomena.

5.0 out of 5 stars The thrilling second book of this series., November 9, 2001
"Lightning Girl" Jess Mastriani has lost her unique psychic powers... or did she? After attention from the media and basically the whole world, summer's finally arrived and she's stuck as a counselor at a camp for musically gifted kids. Not only is her job painful, but when a man shows up begging Jess to find his missing daughter, trouble brews. Jess knows that she doesn't want any more attention than she had, but she also knows that if her powers aren't put to the test the missing kid may never be found. Adventure and mischief are in store for her, but she has to get to the bottom of the mysteries fast. And time is running out. Code Name Cassandra is the second exciting book in Jenny Carroll's 1-800-Where-R-You series, but the first book, When Lightning Strikes, is a little better. No fan of The Mediator and 1-800-Where-R-You series should miss this thrilling read.

You see, since being hit by lightening, she is psychic, and can find missing people once she sees their picture. Naturally, the fibbies are interested. Since Jess does not want to wind up a lab rat, she has lied, saying she lost her powers. Still, she regularly makes secret calls to the missing persons' hotline to tell them where a missing child might be found.
When she gets a job as a summer camp counselor, life looks great, even if Rob was not exactly broken up over her being gone for weeks. She doesnt' even complain too much about being assigned a cabin full of bratty boys determined to drive her psychotic. Then, a father asks for her help in rescuing his child and a boy goes missing. Jess' secret can stay hidden or she can risk it all to save two kids.

With a moving message in a funny package, Ms. Cabot re-enforces the message of that parable, and also the necessity of self sacrifice for the good of others. Brava.

Jess gets a job as a camp counselor! That alone is worth reading :D
When a desperate father shows up at camp asking Jess to find his little girl, Jess has no idea how much trouble she can get in. Rob's there to help (though you never see enough of him :dreamy sigh:) and with one more success mission, Jess things that the worst that can happen now is that she get's fired for sneaking out during her work ours.
She got another thing comin'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just as good as the last, July 27, 2002
Unlike lots of books I've read, Code name Cassandra is just as good as When Lighting Strikes. Jessica Mastriani, hidding her strange powers from the FBI takes up a job at a summer camp for musically gifted kids.
When a desparate father comes to her to ask for her help to find his daughter, Jess risks her powers being known to help. With pycho's trying to kill her and annoying kids its one hell of a summer.
This books is a perfect read, the main character is brave and totally funny. Its yet another great read from Jenny Carroll. (auther of the princess diaries)

5.0 out of 5 stars Jess thought her troubles were over..., September 9, 2001
Jess, dubbed Lighting girl for her ability to find missing children thanks to a bolt of lightning, though her troubles where over. Only a few people know about her special abilities: her best friend Ruth, her would-be boyfriend Roy, and her friend at 1-800-Where-R-You Rosemary. But when she signs up to be a councelor for a summer camp for gifted children she finds more problems than she can handle. Weather it's rotten kids or a not-so-loved fellow councelor, Jess just manages to take it in stride. But when a man comes for her, begging her help on finding his daughter, she find that she can't refuse. But soon she's getting into more trouble than she ever could imagine.

I found this to be a very exciting book, just as good as the last one. I hope Carroll continues to write books in this seires. I'd love to hear what happens to the charecters next. If your a fan of the series I reccomend this fully. THe only complaint I have is the title, the whole Code name Cassandra thing has only a small part in the book. I think Lighting Girl or something like that would be a better title. But other than that the book was great.

When Jess Mastriani was struck by lightning, she gained the amazing ability to locate missing people. But when the government tried to use her for her powers, she lied and said she had lost them. Now it's summer, and Jess is working at a camp for musically gifted kids. It's not her idea of fun, but it's better than spending her days working at one of her family's restaurants. Jess thinks she's safe from government agents at the camp. Then Jonathan Herzberg showed up. His ex-wife has kidnapped their five-year-old daughter, Keely. He's desperate to find her, and begs Jess to use her powers to locate Keely. Although she fears the government will find out about her lie, Jess can't say no. But by saving Keely, Jess will gain a very dangerous enemy. I highly reccomend this book to all fans of Jenny Carroll.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jess Mastriani is My Hero!, April 15, 2011
By
Karen Keyte (Cumberland, ME USA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)

Jessica Mastriani, feisty heroine of When Lightning Strikes, is back and as cranky as ever in this second installment of the 1-800-Where-R-You series. After being struck by lightning during a freak April storm Jess developed a decidedly odd psychic power. If she looks at a picture of a missing person before she goes to bed, Jess wakes up knowing where that person is now. Exactly where he or she is. Every time. Unfortunately for Jess, having a freaky mutant power isn't all sunshine and roses. Especially when the Feds, specifically the FBI and the U.S. Army, convinced her to let them 'study' her. One daring raid on a military base later (complete with a blown-up helicopter), Jess has decided that working with the Feds is not for her. She has informed all and sundry representatives of the U.S. government and the news media that her new-found psychic power has left as suddenly as it came and, even though the Feds obviously don't believe her, they've backed off a bit.

All of which leaves Jess free to work as a counselor to a bunch of musical prodigies at Camp Wawasee. Jess figures a summer on a lake in northern Indiana is just what the doctor would order, you know, if the doctor knew she still had her freaky powers. A little sun, a lot of music, a cabin full of twelve-year-old girls eager to have their hair braided, what could go wrong? Alas, because Jess obviously has the worst luck in the world, the answer is 'everything.'

First of all, a fellow counselor comes down with mono and Jess is asked to move in with a cabin full of twelve-year-old boys, no hair braiding skills required. They're paying her, so of course she's going to say yes, which means she's stuck with the eight little terrors. As if managing her pack of wild dogs, er.. boys, wasn't bad enough, a distraught father shows up at Wawasee and asks Jess to help him find his missing five-year-old daughter. Jess wants to help, but first she has to find a way to do that without giving away the fact that she still has her powers. This isn't going to be easy, but that's the story of Jess's life.

Although this book is the series, enough back story is given so that a reader who picks this one up first isn't going to be lost. As with When Lightning Strikes, Code Name Cassandra is lifted above the mainstream of Y.A. fiction by Meg Cabot's stellar storytelling and the snappy dialogue. Lots of fun!
