The check engine light on my truck came on. A local repair shop quoted me $92 to diagnose the problem and said that it would take about an hour.

For half the cost of the shop diagnosis fee, I figured this code reader was worth a try. Use couldn't be simpler - find the OBD-II port under the dash, turn the key to the "on" position, plug the code reader into the port, and press the "read" button.

It only took a couple of seconds to read the codes and tell me why the check engine light came on.

Build quality seems to be pretty good. The cord appears to be heavy duty and the plastic housing seems sturdy. And the LCD screen is backlit to make it easy to read in the dark. And to top it off, the price was a lot less than having a shop read the codes. Now I can read any code that comes up on any of my cars!

I purchased my CodeKey at Costco and it worked perfectly on my 2007 Honda Element. In case you don't like to read instruction manuals, here is the simple procedure:

Turn ignition ON (but don't start the car). Plug the CodeKey into the vehicle's computer connector. Press and release the Read button. That's IT! CodeKey will display, "Searching...." and within a few seconds you will have a summary of the codes found. Continue to press and release the Read button to scroll through the codes and the code descriptions.

If you wish to delete a code, perform the read instructions above and scroll to the code you would like to delete. Press and hold the Delete button until a confirmation screen appears (about 3 seconds). Release the Delete button. Now press and release the Delete button to delete the code or press and release the Read button to cancel and not delete the code.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep Your Mechanic Honest, July 8, 2010

This review is from: CodeKey Car Engine Diagnostic Tool - OBDII On-Board Diagnostic - CAN Controller Area Network Code Reader
I have had the Check Engine Light (CEL) come on in our 2003 VW Passat and GTI several times. Using the CodeKey, I check the code and then erase the code from the system. Using Google to search for the code, I can find out what is wrong and determine if I can fix it myself. Often times, after resetting the code the CEL does not come back on. The one time I could not get the code to stay off, I was able to take it to my mechanic and tell him what the problem was. Mechanics are less likely to do more work than required when you can diagnose the problem yourself. I highly recommend this diagnostic tool. It will pay for itself the first time you use it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Code Reader, May 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: CodeKey Car Engine Diagnostic Tool - OBDII On-Board Diagnostic - CAN Controller Area Network Code Reader
I bought this because my car is now 10 years old and engine light is coming on more and more often these days. The charge for the reading the codes is 89.00 with no repair. It was happening once or twice a year and for things like the thermostat and a gas ping. I finally decided I could buy the darn thing and find out the problem and save money at the same time. Since I purchased the code reader I have used it twice and my neighbors have used it about 6 times. It is a great item and WELL WORTH THE SMALL COST. So far I have saved about $130.00 this year alone with the code reader, if you count the neighbors it is closer to $664.00 and counting. THANKS CODEKEY!!

ARRIVED QUICKLY AND PERFECT-----I PUT THE DEVICE TO WORK RIGHT AWAY AS I INSTALLED A RACING EXHAUST ON ONE OF MY DODGE VIPERS AND THE ENGINE CHECK LIGHT WAS COMING ON. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE
DIAGNOSTIC CODES AND WAS ALERTED TO INEFFICIENT CAT PERFORMANCE. THE DEVICE CLEARED THE DASH LIGHT AND THE RACING COMPANY SENT REPLACEMENT CATS. DEVICE WORKS WELL AND IS EASY TO USE AND
ACCURATE----------GETS A FIVE STAR AND HIGH RECOMMEND AS TO GOOD QUALITY AND REASONABLE COST AND THIS DEVICE SHOULD BE PART OF EVERY CAR OWNER'S GARAGE. ALSO, I PURCHASED A SECOND ONE AS A GIFT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfect save time and money, March 6, 2010
This review is from: CodeKey Car Engine Diagnostic Tool - OBDII On-Board Diagnostic - CAN Controller Area Network Code Reader
A week back check engine light came on my 2004 Honda Accord. I bought codekey reader from costco, hooked up to the OBDII port, and read the codes successfully. Initially I had trouble locating the obdii port. After a call to Honda dealer I figured out the exact location of the port - driver side, under the dashboard, left hand side, just above the fuse box. I had to literally put my head on the car mat to see the position of the port. It took a while for the codekey to read and display the codes. Good part - it not only displays the codes, but also the description. In my case the error was 'fuel cap loose'.

I checked the cap, in fact it is very loose. Tightened cap, read the code again, and erased it. Started the engine, and I don't see the check engine light now.

Auto Repair shop quoted $85 to diagnose the check engine light.

It is really a great device at less than half price of the diagnosis cost. Check Engine light mystery is demystified without going to a repair shop!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not work on my Subaru or Honda vehicles, December 20, 2009
This review is from: CodeKey Car Engine Diagnostic Tool - OBDII On-Board Diagnostic - CAN Controller Area Network Code Reader
I purchased a CodeKey diagnostic tool at Costco to read the code for a Check Engine light on my 2001 Subaru Forester. When I pushed and held the "READ" button the display never went into the "searching" mode. I called CodeKey tech support and was told that sometimes the button has to be held down for up to a couple minutes until it establishes communication with the vehicle's computer. I held the button down for a full 5 minutes and it still did not display anything other than "CodeKey". I also tried it on a 1998 Honda Accord and got the same result. Thinking I might have gotten a bad unit, I returned it to Costco and got another one. The results were the same with the second one, so I have to believe that there are certain brands of vehicles on which this tool does not work, but nothing to that effect was mentioned in product details. Hence, the low rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars quick press and release and it works fine, October 8, 2010
This review is from: CodeKey Car Engine Diagnostic Tool - OBDII On-Board Diagnostic - CAN Controller Area Network Code Reader
I purchesed this item and at first when I read one of the reviews about it not working after having bought (2) I was concerned I could have bought a bad one also, but after reading carefully I read that you press the read button and release it quickly not press and hold,it can be a little misleading the way it is writen but a quick press and it works fine, goes write into the search mode, my 2001 chevy silverado and 2002 honda accord had no codes.

Easy to use and works perfectly. The hardest part is finding where the port to plug it into on the car. :)
Able to erase diagnostic codes off the car to see if they appear again after fixing faults.
