If you like The Fratellis and retro-style rock pop acts like The Last Shadow Puppets you're going to love the eponymous debut release from Codeine Velvet Club. Lou Hickey and Jon Lawler work very well together - their voices complement one another beautifully and the feeling I get from listening is that there was a lot of fun being had in the studio when they were recording this collection of gems.
So why only 4 stars? Whilst the album is worthy of 5-stars, the CD product itself is not, since it is missing the #11 bonus track, CVC's unexpectedly excellent cover of The Stone Roses' "I Am The Resurrection." This is clearly a flaw in manufacture - I even requested a replacement CD from Amazon as I thought perhaps mine was the only one with this error - both the original and replacement discs were missing this eleventh track. ------- UPDATE April 19, 2010 After tweeting at @CodeineVelvetCb who then re-tweeted my message to US record label @dangerbird, I contacted Dangerbird direct through their web site. They responded within 24 hours with a link to the download of the missing extra track and promise to send a full CD soon - the problem appears to have been rectified and a complete CD is on its way folks!

I'd picked up a couple CDs from the Fratellis and given them a couple listens, but never a thorough examination. A couple months back I was out for a Metric concert up in Seattle, WA and Codeine Velvet Club took the stage (after the appallingly aweful first opening act Nico Vega left the stage). They were melodic, fun, dare I say classy even? All the while I was listening to them I couldn't help but think they sounded strangely familiar. After looking up some info it appears there was a good reason for that since Jon Fratelli is one of the lead vocalists. This album is definitely worth a listen! They're also quite good live and if you get the chance I recommend seeing them. Honestly, I like this duet inspired music better than The Fratellis, but if you're already a fan you should like this too.

I can't understand why this group flew so far under the radar. This is a first class act with great vocals and performances in a classy retro rock and roll. Jon Lawler (Fratellis) and Lou Hickey -- great synergy these two -- front a high energy band that really know how to play! Check out some of their 'live in Glasgow' videos on YouTube that need to be released on Blu-ray. The CVC apparently has disbanded with the principals going forward with solo recording careers. Gosh darn. I hope they come revisit their CVC personna every now and then.
Highly recommended.

I was introduced to this band via my daughter. Sometimes to pays to listen to your children. This is great first album, and I hope I am onto a hot thing for the coming summer.
Tunes that hark back to classic acts such as Nancy and Lee. An all round great album. |
