No excessive permissions? Not even one?! No In App.Purchasing? Not even for a bigger War Vessel? No OpenFeint? Not even to play against others online & post my scores to Facebook & Twitter? Well then, I just HAD to check this game out & I'm sure glad that I did!

It has a few different twists that make it slightly different than your well-known & classic Battleship. The one thing I noticed right off was how your able to place your ships diagonally. I don't recall being able to do this with the Hasbro game as a kid. I believe they could only be placed vertically or horizontally. This option only makes game play strategy all that more fun & interesting!

You can play in or out of Expert Mode against either; James, Ted, or Hans with either all your ships being Small, Medium or Big. You can choose to place your ships strategically yourself or have them randomly placed by the computer.

The graphics are good, and the music & sound effects are terrific! Someone had mentioned having an issue with the game possibly failing to respond to the touch/tap controls but, my Kindle Fire responds flawlessly. Although, I've recently had a similar experience where this happened where the app didn't respond to touch well at all, therefore, I reinstalled the app. This corrected the problem. Perhaps this will help those having touch/ response issues with this app until theirs an update containing a fix. ;-)

Not only do I enjoying the nostalgia that this game brings but, I'm truly enjoying the strategic game play that's involved. I'd forgotten why us kids would play for hours after bedtime under the bedcovers with flashlights...Battleship was quite addicting & this game app has the same effect! I believe I'll be keeping this one on my Kindle for awhile!

If you enjoyed playing Battleship as kid then, I HIGHLY recommend getting this app! =)

5 stars! *****

I have tried out quite a few Android Battleship games, and this one is the best by far. There are only two annoyances I have with the game, and I will get them out there first before delving deeper into everything else.

First of all, the AI is a tad messed up. Ted (easy) is a terrible shot. There have been instances where he would shoot his way all around my ships without hitting them, allowing me to win easily. Hans (hard or impossible) on the other hand is a dirty, dirty cheat - able to beat you in just a few moves (not always). This leaves James (medium), and I have to say that he is balanced really well. James provides a challenge while not utterly destroying you in a few seconds.
I know the hard difficulty is supposed to be hard, but Hans is often able to hit multiple ships with just his opening volley. That is a bit ridiculous.

My second issue is the "MORE APPS FROM US" icon that resides right on your menu screen (but this is the case with a lot of games). It goes away once the game starts, but it's still annoying and should probably be placed in the options menu (yes, I'm nitpicking but the rest of the game is so good that I felt I had to).
Clicking this thing allows you to instantly purchase more games from the developer. You need to make sure that your phone is locked down before giving it to your child or you may suddenly have a few more games.

Before we get into the review, let me give you a bit of information on the game itself.
The premise is simple. You take a sheet of graph paper (I don't like the Hasbro version because it doesn't allow diagonal placement) and divide it into two 10X10 grids. You then position your square ships on the lower portion of the grid and use the upper portion to track your shots. Your opponent does the same.
From that point on, it is your mission to sink every ship (hit every ship square) your opponent has by calculating the most likely placement of his ships. This is done by carefully looking at the grid and using your hits as well as misses for further guidance.

Now let's move on to the review:

Battleship Pro is the classic Battleship that you most likely played as a kid, but with more options that in my opinion greatly improve the game. These additions are:

The mine: Destroys your ship if hit.
The salvo shots: Allow you to take more than one shot at a time.
The bomber attacks: Will carpet bomb a small section of the hex grid.

These all make the game a bit more fun, challenging, and allow for much quicker play sessions (this is a good thing). I found myself really worried when looking for the small ships, because I was always worried about hitting a mine instead.

Another solid change is that you are now able to place and rotate the ships in any way you chose, this means that they can be placed vertically, horizontally, and diagonally. This tiny change allows you to really have full control of your fleet and makes the game a lot more strategic. This is the only reason I preferred the pen and paper game of Battleship to the board game by Hasbro that didn't allow for this.

The other changes are minor, but still enjoyable. There are multiple fleet sizes to choose from, and the statistics are fairly extensive. While multiplayer is promised, it is not in the game as of yet (can't wait for this to happen). The only thing this game actually lacks is the ability to name your player. You always play as "Jack", however this should be an extremely easy fix.

Graphics and sound are more than good enough for a game like this. The explosions are satisfactory, the ships look good, and passing clouds add a bit of ambiance to an otherwise bland hex field. Still, it's much better than a piece of paper or the Hasbro game. If i could make a suggestion, it would be to make your misses red instead of white so that the clouds don't obscure them, and add in a random ripple or two for the water.

Finally I have to bring up the lack of permissions this game requires to install and play. This is always a nice surprise as more and more games use excessive data mining.
So don't bother waiting, just go ahead and buy it. Even at $2 bucks it's a good value and if multiplayer ever arrives, it will be even better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun game! August 9, 2012

I have always loved Battleship, starting when we played it on graph paper eons ago. This is a wonderful version of it; great sound effects! Being a woman, I kind of wish I didn't have to be "Jack," but that's the way it goes! At least I can't find any option to change my player name. Fun app!

2.0 out of 5 stars Had to keep Amazon Play on my phone to use it.
I removed the game due to the fact I had to keep Amazon Play installed on my phone to use the game. Not true with Silent Submarine, so I kept that one on the phone.
