Although this game was a little bit harder to setup than most games, it runs flawlessly on this terrible computer of mine and has endless entertainment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Never got to play the game! August 18, 2013

My son never got to play the game. We purchased it from Amazon who gave us a code to download it from another company. That company used a third company to authenticate the code. After weeks of emailing and calling and buckpassing, I gave up having wasted too much time. Amazon says a refund isn't possible so I learned a lesson.

NOTE: Apparently the game doesn't accept activation on Windows 8. It also uses SecuROM and Windows Live on STEAM.

I award a three star rating based on the current market of games in this genre. If this was 2009, I would've given four stars.

Fuel was released back in June 2009 and it is dated as much. The graphics are okay, but I think most people today will adapt to them, meaning it can become a bit stale after a while, but still not bad. You have 5,560 square miles to roam freely without loading times in free-mode as long as you don't crash your vehicle. But when you do crash, loading is very fast (barely two seconds on my system) and you get back in the game right away. Gameplay is quite smooth, then. Day to night is accelerated about right and lighting effects are good.

It doesn't feel much like a racing game, but more like an open-world driving simulation. You start with unbounded racing routes and related goals, have career modes and challenges, etc. It's not much like Dirt, Grid, Split Second, or Ridge Racer Unbounded. Basically, take an open-world RPG like Fallout 3, remove all the RPG elements (but keep customizations like paint, driver clothes and tattoos, etc.), and drop in some vehicles in what is supposed to be a Mad Max-like setting. Some parts of the map have plenty of healthy trees and forests while others are barren deserts. You can go off road and anywhere you want. There is a lot to do in this game and you can spend many weeks just exploring and opening up the features. Want out of your race? Abandon it right on the spot and go anywhere you want by choosing "Go offline free ride".

It does seem a bit lonely in one respect: I see no spectators. Only other drivers.

There is a lot of terrain variety.
