Book Description

September 1, 2008

A codependent lives as if as if what others think matters more than what they think, as if they can please or change someone else, as if they have to answer to another person or persons rather than their own inner voice and Higher Power. It s an insidious and pervasive addiction. And there is a simple way out of it detachment.

Karen Casey takes us through the steps of detachment admitting our attachment, surrendering outcome, forgiving, focusing our attention on what works. When we give up judging others, we become accountable for our own behavior and let others spouses, family, coworkers be accountable for themselves. The power of detachment is a power anyone can claim. It s the power of sanity, of peace, of finding our own inner strength.

Casey shares insights and tools she s discovered in her own decades of sobriety and in talking with dozens of other codependents. Her unique treatment of this much talked about but not clearly understood syndrome focuses not on naming or on cause, but on the individual s own power to detach from the bad situation and make a choice for recovery. Codependence and the Power of Detachment is sure to become the new classic in the field.

Karen Casey captures the experience, strength, and hope that are essential to maintaining healthy relationships with each other and with ourselves. --William C. Moyers, author of Broken

A remarkable book written in easy-to-understand language with great honesty. The cornerstones of this book are stepping stones to letting go of being a victim and reestablishing hope and freedom in one's life. -Jerry Jampolsky, M.D., founder of The International Center for Attitudinal Healing

In this helpful and healing paperback, Casey explores the problem of codependency, which is when we 'spend our entire life letting the actions or words or mere glances of others trigger my behavior, feelings, my attitude, my self-assessment, and thus my plan for each day, as well as my imagined future.' An antidote to this powerlessness is detachment which she defines as 'the ability to care deeply about a situation or another person from an objective point of view. We are able to care but not be controlled by or invested in how another person responds to us.' -Fred Brussat, SpiritualityandPractice.com

"Her writing skills combine seemingly effortless narrative with clear formulations and straightforward advice." -ForeWord magazine

More About the Author

I was born in Lafayette, IN and moved to Minneapolis, MN in 1964. I taught elementary school for a few years and then pursued a graduate degree at the University of MN. I graduated with a Ph.D. in 1979. I published my first book, EACH DAY A NEW BEGINNING: DAILY MEDITATIONS FOR WOMEN with Hazelden Publishing in 1982. It has been followed by the publication of 21 other books, the most recent of which is CULTIVATING HOPE. In early summer of this year (2010), Conari will be publishing the 23rd book: LET GO NOW: EMBRACING DETACHMENT. See www.womens-spirituality.com for a complete listing and description and for a link to my blog. My focus as a writer is on the development of spiritual growth and strengthening one's twelve step recovery, and my personal experience is what I rely on, coupled with the wisdom I glean from the many people I walk among in the rooms of AA and Al-Anon. When I am not in front of the computer writing, I am likely giving a lecture or doing a workshop some where. I have spoken to tens of thousands world-wide over my thirty-five year tenure in recovery rooms. From each experience my gratitude grows. And from each experience, my commitment grows to continue doing what brings my life such joy.

2.0 out of 5 stars There must be a better book about co-dependency out there., September 24, 2008

This review is from: Codependence and the Power of Detachment (Paperback)
After reading the descriptions and reviews of about a dozen different books on co-dependency, I chose this one because, based on the description, it seemed exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a book that would tell me what co-dependency is, and then give me specific information about how to use the art of detachment to overcome it.

That is not what I got from this book.

This book contains extremely repetitive anecdotal accounts of people with varying levels of co-dependency, all weaved together to make an overwhelming message: GO JOIN AL-ANON!!

Really, that's all this book is, a 170-page advertisement for Al-Anon. There are a few insightful comments scattered about, but they are not organized in any coherent or logical way.

I definitely have some codependent traits, and it is definitely something that is impacting my marriage to an addict who is resisting recovery; however, this book really did not give me any useful information that I can now apply to my life. So, I'll be looking for another book to do that I guess, because it's harder to find an Al-Anon meeting in small towns than you might think and I'm not convinced that Al-Anon is the answer to all things plaguing relationships.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope for the recovering codependent, October 16, 2008
This review is from: Codependence and the Power of Detachment (Paperback)
I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to recover or is in the process of recovering from codependency. After having read many of Karen Casey's books and attended many of her workshops: I have found her to be very knowledgable in this area. I recently read this book and am reading it again because there is so much information to absorb. Karen uses other's stories to emphasize what so many of us are going through or have gone through to reclaim our life. It makes it more personal to read about a particular person's situation, how they dealt with it and how their life has changed.

2.0 out of 5 stars For co-alcoholics only, repetitive and not heartfelt, October 12, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Codependence and the Power of Detachment (Paperback)
I had high hopes for this book, but I was disappointed. The book contains 21 stories of friends and family of alcoholics who improved their lives by going to Al-anon meetings. By itself, that should have at least been inspiring, but the stories are written in a very boring, wooden, detached style that makes them all seem exactly alike.

In addition, there is really no discussion about what codependency is, where it comes from, or what the reader can do about it (besides going to Al-anon.) The book is really only a collection of stories with no real context or synthesis. And, since the author's writing style manages to strip all emotion and inspiration from these stories, the book is pretty much a waste of time.

The back cover of this book is misleading. It is not a self-help book for the reader; it's just a collection of poorly transcribed Al-anon member stories. The author doesn't even really define codependency or detachment, and seems to assume we all already knows what she means.

Also, this book is specific to alcoholism. There is no information for people who are codependent to other types of addicts.
