Book Description

2006
Synopsis How can people with different preferences agree on a common course of action? How can self-interested individuals be persuaded to cooperate rather than fight? Questions such as these have been addressed by concerned thinkers since the days of ancient Greece, and they are no less relevant today. From Plato to Machiavelli, Hobbes to Marx, history's great political philosophers and theorists have sought to make people see the world differently, to think about the order of things and the tenuous balance of forces that exists in society: self-interest versus public-interest, strong leadership versus free will, etc. In this illuminating course, Professor Joshua Kaplan explores the classic works of political theory, showing how they can reveal insights into where we came from, where we are now, and where we are going. Biography Joshua Kaplan has taught at the University of Notre Dame since 1987. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz and earned a master's degree from the University of Chicago, schools renowned for two very different approaches to political theory. He teaches courses in political theory, constitutional law, and American politics, and is the Political Science Department's associate director of undergraduate studies. He has been awarded Notre Dame's Kaneb Award for Excellence in Teaching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and enjoyable, March 5, 2011
This review is from: Codes of Power: Political Thought from Plato's Cave to Game Theory (Portable Professor)
This series of lectures looks at the evolution of political theory from the Ancient Greeks, Machiavelli, through the beginnings of Modernity, and into recent history with the end of the Cold War and how game theory was used to understand the political environment produced by bi-polarity. My only gripe, and it is a small one and a compliment on how well the rest of the material is presented, is that he did not take us right into our own times and take a brief look at the how the collapse of the USSR changed how politics was conceived and perhaps mention the theses of men like Friedman and Huntington and the struggle for a new paradigm to understand the world. But what is in the lecture is a great introduction to political theory, its history, and how it is used as well as being entertaining to listen to. I highly recommend it.
