About the Author

Karen S. Scott, MEd, RHIA, CCS-P, CPC, is a registered health information administrator (RHIA) with twenty years' experience in the healthcare field. She has earned the certified coding specialist-physician based (CCS-P) credential from AHIMA, as well as the certified professional coder (CPC) credential from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Karen is owner of Karen Scott Seminars and COnsulting. She has been an educator for many years and has taught in health information management (HIM) programs at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Arkansas Tech University. She holds a BS in HIM and an MEd in instructional technology from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville. She is past president of both the Tennessee and Arkansas HIM associations and is past chair of the AHIMA Council on Certification. The Tennessee Health Information Management Association (THIMA) awarded Karen its Distinguished Member Award in 2005. Karen teaches seminars on coding, reimbursement, medical terminology, and management throughout the country.
