Biography

From the wild and wooly and weird Pacific Northwest, Mark Pickerel has quite the back story. He was the drummer in seminal grunge faves The Screaming Trees, and has played on albums by Mark Lanegan, Brandi Carlile, and some band from Aberdeen named ... er ... um ... Nirvana or something like that. He's toured with Neko Case and contributed to her track on the Hard-Headed Woman: A Celebration of… Read more in Amazon's Mark Pickerel Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The smoky baritone and country-n-blues sketches found within Cody’s Dream are similar to Mark Pickerel’s 2006 solo debut in structure and style, but this new release finds the former Screaming Trees drummer branching out in his storytelling. The title track and the parched "The Last Leaves" cover familiar ground for Pickerel but, after a lamenting cover of Bob Dylan’s "One More Cup of Coffee," the album explodes with swamp rock ("Leaving With the Swamptones"), pop hooks ("Cherokee Grove"), provocative love ballads ("I Promise"), and honey-dripping R&B ("And So Be It Then"). Chameleon-like, Pickerel plays ringleader and saloonkeeper until the end which, two promising forays into his solo career, is hopefully just the beginning. --Scott Holter

Review

Pickerel s dusky baritone sounds like gathering storm clouds in the Arizona desert, while his band conjures up a dusty landscape of spaghetti-Western-tinged saloon rock and lonesome Americana, tempered with the occasional dash of cowpunk. If that sounds dour, it s not: Pickerel s a hopeless romantic with flawless tastes and an uncanny knack for combining his influences into remarkably compelling and original art and storytelling. --Harp Magazine

4.0 out of 5 stars This is roots rock!, April 16, 2008

So glad I listened to this album & not just a 'sample'. The songs tell tales, starting with a slow pace but ending in crescendo. Unique voice & deserves to be at the front.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poised for, not quite making, a breakthrough, July 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cody's Dream (Audio CD)
"Cody's Dream" finds Mark Pickerel and His Praying Hands poised for a breakthrough recording but not quite pulling it off. Pickerel's distinct voice meshes well with this music, music steeped in blues and Americana and dusted with a detached enchantment.

The overall effect works fine through most of the album, and a few tracks, notably Cody's Dream, Let Me Down Easy, and Leaving with the Swamptones are standouts. A few other songs, I Promise, So Be It Then, and She Sleep through the Sirens send me scurrying for the fast forward button on my remote.

Overall, this recording is a solid three and half stars, but not quite four.
