Book Description

February 1988
"Since that essay [Robert Nozick's `Coercion'], there has been a steadily growing literature on coercion, a literature that on the leading issue has divided itself into two types of theories. In one camp are those who view coercion as an empirical or descriptive concept . . . ; in the other camp we find proponents of the position that coercion is a normative or moralized concept. . . . In Coercion, Alan Wertheimer sets forth what must now be considered the most detailed and defensible version of the normative position." --Stuart D. Warner, Ethics

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

$25. rel In a study funded by the Lilly Endowment, Wuthnow (sociology, Princeton) provides a careful analysis of the heritage of American religious life, the forces influencing it since World War II, and church-state relations. The influence of the courts and other policy-setting bodies on religious life are investigated, not only with regard to such "moral" issues as abortion, pornography, and homosexuality but wider issues: the media, the rise of prominent special interest groups, the decreasing importance of denominationalism, and the increase in higher education and technology. Wuthnow finds a liberal/conservative split so pervasive that it is creating two civic religions. A thoughtful study recommended for most libraries. Carolyn M. Craft, Longwood Coll., Farmville, Va.
