Editorial Reviews

Debut album from French-Canadian chanteuse Beatrice Martin (AKA Coeur de Pirate). Although this album was recorded when she was just south of 20 years old, the music contained on Coeur De Pirate's debut far belies her years. Martin, who has played the piano from the age of three, started composing her own songs in 2007. Members of Bonjour Brumaire noticed her and asked her to join their group as singer and keyboardist. Once she had established her own unique musical vision, B‚atrice left the group to concentrate on Coeur de Pirate. Martin's songs are whimsical, magical and seem to have been inspired by music recorded in the early part of the 20th Century while still retaining a modern sensibility. Universal.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack to Spring & Summer May 13, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Chanson Francaise is certainly an interesting genre - for every great album thats released, there are an infinite number that are plodding, dreary, and downright un-musical, despite their best intentions. Throw in the fact that much French music is now made outside France, most notably in Canada, and you've got an eclectic selection of albums to choose from - some better than others.

French-Canadian musicians in particular are an enthralling set - only because they've given us unlikely stars in the form of Arianne Moffatt, and Pierre LaPointe, both of whom are still rather underrated. But perhaps their finest achievement has been Jerome Miniere, whose 2010 record ranked as one of the greatest albums released that year, in any language or musical genre.

Which brings us to Coeur de Pirate, a three-word pseudonymn for young Beatrice Martin, a singer from Quebec who was just 20 at the time of the recording of this album, and who over the span of two short years has gone on to become one of France's twee-music darlings, and rightly so. Much of this appeal has to do with her inspired collaboration with Julien Dore, himself a major media draw, and their resulting duet would go on to set the French singles chart on fire, resulting in widespread exposure for this, her debut album.

Beatrice doesn't necessarily possess a great singing voice. Like Vanessa Paradis before her, she has a very sweet, almost saccharine tonality to her voice and she is almost incapable of rising above the register she is singing in. Many critics have criticized this sort of singing as merely 'talking over songs', but I would disagree. She does indeed sing, but tends to play it safe but not attempting notes she cannot score on.

5.0 out of 5 stars COEUR DE PIRATE(BÉATRICE MARTIN) February 17, 2010
Format:Audio CD
COEUR DE PIRATE took QUEBEC and FRANCE by storm with her debut album that lasts only 30 minutes, but is a joy from the beginning to the end.COEUR DE PIRATE(her real name is BÉATRICE MARTIN)do not possess a great voice, but compensates with a melodic sensibility that is amazing for a 20 years old girl. You may say to yourself:sounds like a young FRANCE GALL minus innocence.Actually, she writes her own songs which is always a plus for any artist.Try to resist ENSEMBLE or POUR UN INFIDÈLE is virtually impossible. There is a good chance that you listen to this disc more than twice. One of the best debut album from a young FRENCH singer since VÉRONIQUE SANSON in 1972.That's a long time ago.I can't wait for her next opus.Go BÉATRICE go!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hermoso placer January 25, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase

Delightful French pop from this lovely and talented French-Canadian. This is better than anything from the 60s. One of my favorite albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars Coeur De Pirate provides a playful romp for your ears. August 16, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Coeur De Pirate's self-titled CD provides a wonderfully playful treat for listeners, with a quintessentially French flavor.

All of the songs on the album are in French, but one needn't know French to enjoy it! It is easy to translate the lyrics online if one wants to know just what the words are, but there is ample emotion in each song for them to still have meaning even if the listener doesn't understand the language.

3.0 out of 5 stars Coeur De Pirate debut CD August 12, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The first time I've heard that name was the song "Audue" from the second CD. I decided to get the debut CD as well because love her second one. I think it's not as polished as her second one but its' a matter of taste (and i must admit i don't speak French so have no clue what she is singing, so its purely music that i like).
Try it yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This album is one of my favorites. It's entirely in French, which I don't speak whatsoever, but it's beautiful. I wish she would do an English album, but I'll take what I can get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very truthful, realistic, artistic, heart-tugging songs of passion
I must say that as a male listener, I was appreciating the wisdom put forth by a youthful French-Canadian singer who tells it like it is between men and women romantically. Read more
