Yes, it makes an excellent single large cup. I use a coffee measure that a friend gave me. I like my coffee strong so I put in 4 tablespoons of coffee grounds. Then not quite 2 cups of water. This makes just enough to fill my large coffee mug. The unit has a timer to turn it on, but I do not like to set it up the night before as the coffee is exposed to too much air. It only takes a few minutes to set it up in the morning.
This coffee maker uses 4 cup basket style paper filters. It is also compatible with the Mr. Coffee permanent filter, part number 6659, that is available directly through Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Coffee-Permanent-include-handle/dp/B000WMTBD8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405093150&sr=8-1&keywords=6659
Time? The question is "time"? Hmmm ... Well ... If the question is "can you set the time to begin brewing automatically at the time you select" the answer is "yes". If the question is "at what time after brewing does it turn itself off automatically", the answer is "30 minutes". If the question is "can the appliance be used for time travel", the answer is "I will get back to you yesterday, don't you remember". ;)
