Product Description

Flavor: City Roast Colombian Supremo | Size: 5 Pound

Our Colombian Supremo coffee beans roasted to the full city roast level. The slightly darker roast maintains many of the qualities of the light roast, while creating a heavier body and releasing more of the characteristic flavors of the Colombian Supremo bean.

This is a great price for some good beans, and the awesome Amazon prime shipping is just icing on the cake. However, one important thing to consider: When you buy direct from the roaster's website, the beans are roasted fresh and shipped within a day or two. When you buy from Amazon, though, the beans come from a stack of bags that have been sitting in an Amazon warehouse somewhere. The date code is printed on the bags, and mine was over 6 months old! Anyway, this roaster does make a great product, but I would recommend buying direct from their website. Prices are comparable, so the only downside is you'll have to pay for shipping yourself.

It's hard to describe flavor, isn't it? I would compare the smoothness and body of this coffee to a Panama Boquete, but with a much more intense coffee flavor.

When my order arrived today I immediately ground a sample and pulled a shot of espresso with my twenty year old Gaggia. Great crema on the first try. That tells me the beans are quite fresh.

This is described as a dark roast. I'd describe it as something like "full city roast plus." It's dark...but not too dark. The beans are just to the point of releasing some oils, but not full on oily. The aroma upon opening the bag is great. And when grinding, that aroma just gets better.

Regardless of crema, aroma and appearance, the proof is in the tasting and I can only say that this coffee gets very high marks. It is rich, low acid coffee with a great mouth feel and great coffee flavor. I think it's well worth a try and personally I know that I'll be ordering it again.

Flavor Name: Super Dark EspressoSize Name: 5 Pound Verified Purchase
On their web site, Coffee Bean Direct advertises this as their darkest roast. Previously, on Amazon, I reviewed Coffee Bean Direct's Italian Espresso Roast and find the Super Dark Espresso to be equally good and only slightly different. For my basic observations see the previous review; this review will serve to give the reader my observations made in a side-by-side comparison.

I have uploaded an image of the two roasts, the Italian Espresso on the left, the Super Dark Espresso on the right. Both are, clearly, Espresso roasts as evidenced by the surface oil on the beans. Both roasts are slightly unevenly roasted, the Italian Espresso more so than the Super Dark. Not clearly shown in the image is the fact that a small percentage of the beans of the Super Dark roast are starting to break apart, a consequence of exceeding the usual roasting temperatures of the so-called "second crack." So what? It indicates to me that the Super Dark roast beans have been roasted to a point beyond which further roasting would not be possible without destroying the beans (yielding a charcoal-like product). However, as noted, the added roasting has produced a more even dark roast which, in turn, has produced a coffee that is slightly more rich than the Italian Espresso roast. Here I would emphasize the word "slightly"; apart from a side-by-side sampling, I doubt I could distinguish one from the other on a day-to-day basis.

In a word, both roasts are superb and nicely priced. If I recall correctly, the Super Dark roast cost $3.00 more than the Italian Espresso roast, I should think a reasonable difference if one's palate is able to differentiate between the two roasts.

In either case, I think anyone who enjoys dark roast coffees or Espresso will be happy with either of these blends.

Good beans for a fair price. Drinking coffee in large volumes precludes indulging in some of the finer roasts. Going this way one can indulge one's coffee habit without breaking the bank or resorting to supermarket canned ground coffee.

After finishing this bag of Brazilian Dark I will probably try a bag from another part of the world. Brazilian coffee is mild and smooth whereas I prefer a coffee with more of an edge.

Flavor Name: Dark Sumatra MandhelingSize Name: 5 Pound Verified Purchase
I enjoy Sumatra beans from my local roaster on a regular basis, so I wanted to try buying in bulk to take into the office. Since I like my coffee bold, I ordered this instead of the regular Sumatra. Calling it "dark" is an understatement. I actually had to scale back the grounds in my French press about 40% - this stuff will punch you in the face twice and steal your car! This turned out to be a blessing in disguise: We normally use 6-7 scoops in our 12-cup automatic at work, but with this we only need 3 or 4 at the most.

Kudos to CBD for actually meaning what they say when they say "dark"! And the actual flavor, once you wrangle control of the strength back, is quite good. Just heed this fair warning: If you find yourself wondering what a 12-cup pot of espresso would taste like, this coffee is for you. Otherwise, you may want to try the regular Sumatra first.

The Brazilian coffee beans were extremely fresh and robust. They make a lovely coffee, cup after cup, and the savings is palpable by buying five pounds at a time. This purchase was made to use as our exclusive "house" coffee in our home.

We have tried four other coffee direct blends, and this by far, is my favorite. Very deep flavor without the acid and oils to spoil the enjoyment.... It is not as good as the house blend which is always freshly roasted from Full City in Eugene... but it is half the price...and as Yogi said, a nickles just not worth a dime anymore. If you like it very strong try 6 mins in a French Press...if not, drip is just fine. I would not freeze beans to store as others have advised.
