Book Description

What if a new plant disease threatened the world’s coffee crop? What if it wasn’t an accident? Coffee Crash, the debut novel from author Steve Hoffenberg, is a biotech mystery thriller that redefines eco-terrorism.

Microbiologist Samuel Decker travels to Brazil to investigate a new organism that rapidly destroys coffee trees, and he discovers puzzling clues surrounding the outbreak.

Matthew Cochran, the CEO of a major U.S. coffee retailer, seeks to leverage industry turmoil and reap millions in profits through commodities market manipulation.

Eddy Zeger, the Indonesian leader of a radical environmentalist group, plots to wreak economic havoc by disseminating the disease into coffee plantations worldwide.

Trails of evidence lead in conflicting directions as Decker and others unravel the truth and struggle to save the world’s coffee plantations from annihilation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, different, and a lot of fun December 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For it's genre -fun, light reading but with interesting characters and with a bio-tech thriller story line - I could almost have given it 5 stars. Certainly not "literature", but if you like both decent writing, a fun, fast read and being transported to interesting new places, or being exposed to something other than the tired, same-old, cop/detective/spy motif, this is well worth a little time. Bonus: also a fascinating look at the coffee industry, from A to Z (ie from plant to retail!)
But, you don't have to be a coffee lover to enjoy it.

additional info: I took a chance on buying this based on the biotech-thriller theme, a very small number of reviews, and no idea what I'd get for my $. Usually when I do that, I end up disappointed, and cynically believing that all those great reviewers must have received free copies or been connected to the author. Neither is true for me, I just really, really liked it, and chose to spare a few minutes to post this (was actually at the My Orders page on Amazon for something else, and saw this, and took a few minutes out to post a well deserved kudo).

5.0 out of 5 stars Coffee Crash by Steve Hoffenberg October 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Coffee Crash, by Steve Hoffenberg, is a compelling read, with multiple plot threads that move and interact in a fluid and seamless manor. For a good part of the book, I couldn't tell who'd-dun-it. The writing is concise and detail-rich, and is peppered with quotes, phrases in Portuguese (translated for us non-speakers) and word play. All of which makes it clear that Mr. Hoffenberg enjoys words - and his use of words made me smile on numerous occasions throughout the book. I'm hoping for a sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, Especially for Coffee Lovers April 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Coffee Crash is very original, hopping, engaging, and informative. It's a fun read. A creative and theoretically plausible premise involves bioterrorists, retail chain capitalists, and the coffee industry. I love getting lost in a good read and learning something in the meantime - in this case, about the whole coffee industry. The story takes us to corporate plantations in Brazil for a look inside how they run, and then hits other coffee-growing countries as the hero tries to stop a threat that has the potential to kill more than just coffee plants. I've found myself mentioning the book in conversations, especially since coffee is such a part of daily life. It's about time someone makes a suspense/mystery out of it. The author also touches on other intriguing topics, from moths to astronomical phenomena, as they work into the story. The ending is clever - and an epilogue leaves the option for a sequel. There are a few places I got a little lost and had trouble keeping track of all the details, but the book is well worth it. An entertaining tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coffee Crash by Steve Hoffenberg (Buy It!) July 9, 2013

Format:Paperback
This debut novel by this author is EXCELLENT and well-done! It reminded me of Michael Crichton's "Micro" and "Prey." And how clever to choose to strike fear into the heart of our over-caffeinated society. This book is a perfect summer beach read. I highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is a page turner! I got hooked very quickly. May 22, 2013
Format:Paperback
This is indeed a page turner, a terrific book to bring on a long flight or on a vacation. The story provides plenty of intriguing clues early on, but the number and variety of clues just increase your interest. Along the way, you learn a lot about the coffee industry, Brazil, the mindset of the miscreants, and the author's sense of humor.
