5.0 out of 5 stars Before it's too late, August 10, 2009
This review is from: Coffee tower: A history of the 459th Bomb Group (Hardcover)
I had bought this book for my Dad (a lead bombardier) prior to his death in 2004. We both had the opportunity to read it and then discussed it. The book is well-written and and has plenty of interesting photographs. If you have a relative in the 459th, it's an excellent way to get him to start talking. I'm glad I bought Dad a copy before it was too late.

This review is from: Coffee tower: A history of the 459th Bomb Group (Hardcover)
Having not only read this book, but being related to one of its members that served in the 459th BG (B-24 bombers, the Real Heavies!, they'd say!!!), this book is a great source of facts, beginning to end, for the era of WWII.
My family member, a "Sperry-Ball-Turret" gunner that flew on "Fords Folly", my uncle Rudy. Short enough to not have any questions on if he would fit in that thing! :) Rudy flew in a few others, but as mechanics kept moving the crew to other birds due to problems, well, thats how it goes. He was one of many that did some of the famous Nose-Art on the B-24's, just to pass the time away.

The group started out of Westover AFB, Mass, and ended up in Italy. The designation has since changed to MedEVAC, but the colors remain: Checker-boards!

Not many of these guys left, but they are there, and they are standing tall for what they went thru, with and for each other. Rudy, You are one of the big guys in my life; thanks for your service. HOO YAH!
Joe.
