Editorial Reviews

Product Description

"A no-holds-barred thriller plot with a sense of the ridiculous, lacing nastiness with some delightfully black comedy" - The Big Issue Scotland

"You really can't afford to miss out on this" - Ray Banks, author of Sucker Punch and Beast of Burden

Coffin Dodgers is a fast, funny and fat-free thriller that's been compared to Christopher Brookmyre, Colin Bateman, Tim Dorsey, Carl Hiaasen and the films Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.

Eighty is the new thirty. Nobody's having babies, the old massively outnumber the young and the hip crowd has become the hip replacement crowd. Twentysomething barman Matt Johnson would be bored senseless if someone wasn't trying to kill him.

When Matt isn't playing silly pranks on his elders with his colleague Dave or laughing at Dave's dating disasters, he's trying to summon up the courage to ask best friend Amy out on a date. Then Matt narrowly escapes a car wreck, and he discovers that his accident was no accident. Someone's murdering young people, and dozens are already dead. Can Matt, Amy and Dave stop the killings? The answer involves guns, gangsters, an angry bear and plenty of irate pensioners.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love his sense of humor., February 10, 2012

I loved this book. It was so funny without trying too hard. The author is a good writer, and he does a good job of developing his characters. I'm really hoping he writes a sequel to this book because he left me hanging a little. I will definitely be reading other books by this author when/if he has anymore. :D So, what are you waiting for?? Buy his book already. It is definitely worth the under $2 price tag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made me laugh, a lot, June 16, 2011
This review is from: Coffin Dodgers (Kindle Edition)
WARNING: do not read this book in public if you're easily embarrassed, as *everyone* looks at you when you start sniggering to yourself.

Coffin Dodgers is a very well-written, extremely funny book which I thoroughly enjoyed. It's very pacy, but that's a good thing because I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next.

Matt and his friends are easy to identify with, in fact I very quickly began to feel like they were old friends. Or at least people I might have got drunk with once or twice :)

There's mystery, danger, humour, murder, and even some romance - but I'm not going to give away the story, if you want to know what happens you'll have to buy the book. And you should. It's really good.

But I did get some very strange looks - it seems people think you're weird if you're sitting by yourself and you suddenly burst out laughing?

More, please...

4.0 out of 5 stars One NOT to dodge, June 8, 2011
This review is from: Coffin Dodgers (Kindle Edition)
I really, really enjoyed this. Laugh out loud funny, strong characters and a great story.

Set in the near future, but in no way sci-fi territory (phew), Coffin Dodgers is a robust comic thriller that follows Matt and his pals trying to convince a disbelieving copper that someone is out to get him. That's 'get' as in 'kill'. Why should this be happening to him in a world where the young are already in a dwindling minority? They're going to have to figure this out by themselves...

Pacey, well-written and a real page-turner. Recommended. And look out for the chase scene in the casino!

More About the Author

Hi there. My name's Gary, I'm in my late thirties, and I live just outside Glasgow in Scotland with my wife, my daughter and a black labrador. I'm a freelance journalist, columnist, author, copywriter, scriptwriter and radio talking head, and I write features, news stories and tutorials about technology, the Internet and pop culture for lots of magazines and websites.

My debut novel Coffin Dodgers hit the Kindle in June 2011, and I've written lots of non-fiction books too: several books for young musicians, one on working from home and one about laptops. I've also co-authored lots of computing and music books, some of which I can talk about and some of which I can't. Before getting into journalism I played in various bands, some of which I like to talk about and some of which I don't.
