The match head on a firestarter is a wonderful idea in principle but the execution doesn't always quite work out as planned. When the match head flares, it doesn't always actually light the firestarter before it simply fizzles out. That said, the firestarter stick itself is absolutely wonderful and burns plenty long enough, large enough and hot enough to start any well prepared tinder pile in even inclement weather.

Don't forget the caution - just be sure you're prepared to start the firestick with your own waterproof matches or lighter because that match head is not waterproof and it certainly isn't fail safe.

These make good tinders. The match head lights easily, and seems strong enough to reliably light the rest of the stick. Another reviewer mentioned the match-head might not light the tinder every time, but i have not had that experience.

That said, you should always have several fire starting options when out in the wilderness. Keep one or two of these in a ziploc with the strike surface *away* from the match-heads :)

I had a hard time getting one of these to ignite from firesteel sparks, so i wouldn't rely on it as your only tinder source. So far nothing beats petroleum jelly saturated cotton balls for easy fire starting from sparks - there are other products that do as well (and cost way more), but i haven't seen anything beat them.

Anyways - these are great, i love them, and recommend them. Just don't rely on them solely.
