I consider myself a pretty traditional outdoors person--I like my map and compass--so I have been fairly resistant to gadgets. In this case, however, I've been pleasantly surprised. It now is one of those items I won't trip without!

As another reviewer has noted, the compass readings aren't very precise--they fluctuate a few degrees even when standing still. This variance is greater indoors, or near any sources of metal, magentic, or electrical interference. In the field, it seems to be more due to changes in stance or the position of one's hand. Level on a rock or log, however, the fluctuations are much less. It definitely gives a fine enough bearing for getting one's general orientation, or for traveling over short distances. If going over long distances, it will make a fine supplement to a traditional compass.

If this device were only a compass, I wouldn't be too excited by it. Since it also has a clock (with alarm) and thermometer, it makes it a useful multi-purpose device.

Prior to getting this handy piece, I often carried a digital watch with me, so as to set the alarm for some of those early travel days. I often also wondered what the current temperature was, especially if I encountered a stretch much warmer or cooler than I expected. Now I can set an alarm, and checking the time is as simple as glancing down at the device hanging around my neck. The thermometer feature captures not only the current temperature, but also logs the high and low temperatures (since the log was last reset). It's a great way to record the daily high and low for your trip logs.

Had the bearings been a little more steady, I'd have given this one five stars. It's a great little device--you'll be glad to have it.

This compass has a fine set of features, but it doesn't work.

I have tried THREE times.

The first suffered a soaking from a leaking water bottle in a fanny pack. We figured that we could not blame the compass for that, so we bought a replacement.

The second broke on initial set-up -- one of the buttons popped right out and was not reparable. We got a refund from Amazon and decided to try once more.

The third made it through set-up, but on first use, on a misty, but not even drizzly day, it failed just as the soaked first one had.

Ridiculous. Maybe the right compass for the desert! :(

got this for a trip overseas, so we could follow the guidebook when it said "go south from the train station" and it's pouring rain. also thought the clock and thermometer functions would be handy in countries where they use 24-hour time and the celsius scale. however, the "mode" button fell off within a week (!), making it impossible to switch functions. and to sour the deal even more, we can't return it to amazon since we were gone for 6 weeks - and i'm not going to pay postage to return it to coghlan's in canada! i will never purchase a coghlan's product again!

I didn't buy this for the compass. I bought it because it has a digital thermometer that can save the highest and lowest temperatures. That's nice to have to see just how cold it got overnight. It also has a clock with an alarm which is very useful. But the actual compass is pretty useless. I carry a small Suunto or Silva compass while backpacking and those are much easier to use, are more accurate, and are much easier to use with a map.

So what you're really buying is a watch with a thermometer. The compass feature should be ignored.

I didn't expect too much from this product. Just wanted to be able to tell the temp on the trail. Didn't expect it to weather well or survive a 20 ft. drop. So I take a little care of it, put it away in rain etc. .

Out of the package, it was 5 degF too high. But since I hike mostly in the range above freezing, the error is pretty much insignificant once it is known. The decimal degree in the display is humorous. Accuracy comes at a price. You have to decide how accurate you really need to be, and how much you're willing to pay. This item fulfills low expectations.
