5.0 out of 5 stars Are you an Aspie?, November 2, 2007
This review is from: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adult Asperger Syndrome (Guides to Individualized Evidence-Based Treatment) (Hardcover)
I find it hard to believe there is only one review for this book! I am an undiagnosed Aspie and I found this book to be beyond belief. OK, I haven't read the whole book and I've started about 5 others on AS. I guess it comes with the territory.

What I am saying is that if you're an Aspie and you want to see how your mind works, in words, right before your eyes then take a look at just the first 50 pages. I've had many professionals (6 - 20) try to help me with very little success, learned of AS about a year ago, and none of them can hold a candle to Valerie. I am awe-struck; she is special!

5.0 out of 5 stars Calling All Adults on the a/A Spectrum!, October 13, 2007
This review is from: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adult Asperger Syndrome (Guides to Individualized Evidence-Based Treatment) (Hardcover)
If you are an adult on the autism/Asperger's spectrum, be sure to make this book a very close friend. You will be very glad that you did.

We all know that Asperger's, which is a neurobiological condition that is the spectrum partner to autism does not vanish once a person reaches voting age. We all know that it is long past time good books with a plethora of resources and helpful information for adults on the spectrum hit the shelves.

This power-packed book is replete with information about applying the cognitive approach towards isolating and, hopefully elmininating spectrum behavior. Adults on the a/A spectrum will more than likely recognize themselves and use this book to empower themselves in navigating social settings with neurotypical counterparts.

This book is truly a Godsend and one I highly recommend. Be sure to add Jerry Newport's book, "Your Life is Not a Label" to your collection as well. Any adult on the spectrum will certainly be able to count on these books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Attention All Aspies and Therapists, October 21, 2008
By
Stephen Byrne (New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adult Asperger Syndrome (Guides to Individualized Evidence-Based Treatment) (Hardcover)
This thorough treatise ought to be required reading for psychotherapists lest those afflicted with the Adult Asperger Syndrome remain undiagnosed and untreated. The chapters are consecutively arranged in a logically ordered fashion:defining Asperger Syndome(AS) in Adulthood;describing the conceptual model of this disorder;dissecting the core problems and offering a treatment plan for the basic cognitive dysfunction as well as for the many co-morbidities associated with AS. One is introduced to the concept of cognitive-behavior therapy and the application of these constructs to AS.

Each chapter's salient points are neatly and concisely summarized in a paragraph of two or three sentences. The volume is replete with in-depth

case studies dealing with the author's assessment and her definitive therapeutic approach to the individual with AS. Her structured yet commonsense,non-judgemental,compassionate sessions give more than new hope to those plagued by AS,leading them to fuller and more constructive lives.

This book deserves recognition and praise by psychotherapists as well as the AS community.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Childhood Disorder Grows Up, June 23, 2010
This review is from: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adult Asperger Syndrome (Guides to Individualized Evidence-Based Treatment) (Hardcover)
Although there has been an increase in the research and clinical studies related to children with Asperger syndrome, it is only recently that psychologists have begun to appreciate the complex challenges faced by adults who were not identified in childhood. Rather than outgrowing their symptoms, children with Asperger syndrome have now become adults with Asperger syndrome and an underserved population. Cognitive-Behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to be of value in addressing the deficits and distortions in thinking as well as many of the coexisting problems (depression and anxiety) experienced by individuals with autism spectrum conditions such as Asperger syndrome. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adult Asperger Syndrome provides a comprehensive framework for conceptualizing AS in adults and formulating treatment plans using CBT evidence-based interventions. Chapters contain important details on conducting a comprehensive assessment, formulating a diagnosis, and providing treatment. Gaus has done a masterful job of describing a conceptual model of cognitive dysfunction in AS and how evidence-based CBT intervention for typical adults can be applied to individuals with AS. The author includes clinical case examples from her practice to illustrate how Asperger syndrome is manifested in adults. The text also includes a list of therapy resources and reproducible forms for professional use. Overall, the book provides a wealth of information and practical interventions that will be a welcome addition to therapists' toolkits. While intended primarily for psychotherapists and clinicians, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adult Asperger Syndrome will also be an essential reference for practitioners in many other disciplines who have an interest in understanding how to treat adults with this autism spectrum condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on Adult Asperger Syndrome to Date, December 31, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
To my knowledge, this book is the first professional resource available to adult Aspies, their families as well as to professionals that are providing much-needed services to them. Together with added understanding and validation of personal experience, I found this book very helpful. I have read many books on Asperger Syndrome and the focus of the literature seems to be largely on childhood and adolescence. Books that do focus on adults tend to be largely autobiographical in style. I hope that Ms. Gaus, and others with similar expertise, will follow through with many more similar, and much-needed, resources in the near future. I will certainly be looking.

I have read a lot of books on the autism spectrum. This does a nice job of explaining asperger syndrome and high functioning autism and differentiating between the challenges of autism and mental health issues that may develop and how to deal with both. Good use of examples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adult Asperger Syndrome, July 2, 2011

As a professional counselor I found Adult Asperger Syndrome to be an excellent educational resource and treatment guide for a counselor. The author did a great job of using CBT to as a choice for treatment. Solid background of the DSM IV and history of discovery then followed by research and treatment. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, December 24, 2011

I am no authority on books about Asperger Syndrome, but this book is spectacular relative to the others I have read. It was very cleanly organized, concise, and crystal clear. I am amazed that it was so easy to read and understand something intended for psychotherapists and not intended for a general audience. It has enlightened me about Asperger Syndrome and demonstrated to me how and why cognitive behavioral therapy is a very worthwhile venture. Thank you Valerie L. Gaus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, November 25, 2011

This book is very technical and is written for therapists so some of it was above my head. But I loved it. He explains so much and really discusses treatment, which has helped me to have intelligent conversations with our therapist and has helped give our treatment some form or shape.
