Book Description

This important volume brings together leading clinicians and researchers to present cognitive-behavioral approaches to treating PTSD and other trauma-related symptoms and disorders. Solidly grounded in the latest theory and research, chapters describe pragmatic, clinician-friendly strategies for working with problems that are prevalent across a variety of trauma experiences, including intrusion and arousal, guilt, anger, substance abuse, dissociation, and relationship issues. Readers gain a deeper understanding of the goals and methods of trauma education, therapeutic exposure, stress management training, cognitive reprocessing, and other interventions, and learn techniques for defusing negative self-talk, working with traumatic memories, and helping clients develop new trauma narratives. Throughout, the volume emphasizes the importance of situating symptomatic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in their interpersonal and environmental contexts, instead of focusing on trauma history alone or viewing clients through a lens of individual dysfunction.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is a book by and for clinicians and scholars. Each therapeutic problem is elegantly reconceptualized as a cognitive and/or behavioral challenge which is then translated into a practical treatment strategy. Thoughtful transcripts of actual therapy sessions attest to the feasibility, accessibility, and effectiveness of such a conceptually driven treatment approach." --Matthew J. Friedman MD, PhD, Executive Director, National Center for PTSD, White River Junction, Vermont, Professor of Psychiatry & Pharmacology Dartmouth Medical School, Hanover, New Hampshire

"Representing the scientist-practitioner approach at its best, this book provides a sweeping, detailed, and complex view of trauma. It covers the theory underlying trauma conceptualizations and empirical findings relevant to assessment and treatment. The coverage is thorough and exceptionally well-documented. The inclusion of a section on trauma across the lifespan, including late life, is exciting and sets a gold standard for recognition of the trauma-related problems of older adults. Throughout the book, chapters expertly balance empirical evidence with a sensitive understanding of the human, emotional experience of trauma survivors." --Antonette M. Zeiss, PhD, Director of Training and Program Development, VA Palo Alto Health Care System, Palo Alto, CA

"This state-of-the-science book provides a practical guide to empirically supported interventions. Impressive in scope and scholarship, it highlights the emerging standard of care across the diverse forms of trauma. Therapists, researchers, and expert witnesses valuing interventions that have demonstrated their effectiveness in research studies will find this book invaluable." --Kenneth S. Pope, PhD, ABPP, author of Recovered Memories of Abuse

5.0 out of 5 stars Great practical and scholarly guide to working in trauma, September 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies for Trauma (Hardcover)
This book represents an exhaustive review of various cognitive-behavioral approaches to the treatment of trauma. It is scholarly and founded on strong scientific research without being pedantic or preachy. Amost every chapter has real-life clinical examples with actual narrative transcripts which can be quite compelling. I especially like the chapters on treating dysfunctional guilt and on dissociation, areas seldom discussed in traditional behavioral circles. All in all, I think this is a great addition to the library of any clinician dealing with emotional trauma.
