Review
"This very useful book provides the framework for the comprehensive treatment of persons with bipolar disorder....Instead of being merely a volume about psychotherapy, this book is a comprehensive overview of the current treatment of bipolar disorder....There is generous use of outlines, lists, and tables, all of which enhance the clarity and usefulness of the book. There is a section on questions frequently asked of therapists by persons with bipolar illness and how these may be best answered....For a relatively slim volume, the amount of specific detail is remarkable....The highly structured, specific nature of cognitive-behavioral therapy as described in this book is both cost-effective and time-efficient. For example, outlines of each session describe in detail the clinical focus for the therapist....This excellent book should be helpful to any mental health treatment provider who deals with persons with bipolar illness. It deserves to be considered the definitive text on the subject." --Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic
"...the reader will be impressed with the face validity of many of the recommendations and with the practical and immediate benefits of increasing patients' knowledge of their illness as well as the benefits of family education and involvement....a sensible and practical treatment guide specifically addressing the needs of patients with bipolar disorder." --Am J Psychiatry
"...the book is as carefully conceived as is the treatment. Basco and Rush have contributed a carefully formulated treatment strategy in a thorough, accessible text that will surely prove to be a valuable resource for practitioners and bipolar patients alike." --Journal of Cognitive Psychotherapy "The chapters on treatment are clearly written with session by session contents, which include the purpose and goals of the session, procedures and homework. Each chapter is also full of case vignettes to illustrate the techniques. I particularly like the chapter on treatment adherence." --Psychological Medicine
"This book is an unusually fine example of a cognitive-behavioral treatment book....The book is a comprehensive treatment manual and the course of treatment is 20 sessions....Unusual for CBT books...this one includes many descriptions of how to work with family members and significant others of patients....This book has set a very high standard for future volumes on this topic. It should be read and used by anyone with an interest in this disorder." --Contemporary Psychology
"The managed care field favors treatment protocols that are empirically based, able to be applied consistently across disciplines, focused on the present, and symptom specific. This text describes a treatment that meets these requirements and that is easily understood by professionals across the mental health disciplines. This text also meets the need for a conduit between psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions....The book's excellent end-of-chapter summaries are especially useful....Drs. Rush and Basco successfully bring together their combined clinical experience of three decades to produce a timely, pragmatic cognitive-behavioral treatment approach for bipolar disorder." --Psychiatric Services
"...(the authors have) succeeded in presenting a coherent, complete, and practical approach to working with individuals with Bipolar Disorder." -- Psychotherapy -- Review--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
Review
"Since it is now clear that optimal treatment for the majority of individuals with bipolar disorder requires an approach that integrates pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, it is reassuring to see this revised, updated manual for one of the key psychotherapeutic modalities. As always, Basco and Rush write with extreme clarity. Readers will benefit from their collective wisdom about ways to intervene in this challenging disorder."--Ellen Frank, PhD, Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic
"A thoughtful, readable, and very useful volume. The authors' coverage of issues of compliance and adherence in therapy is comprehensive and compelling, providing a sound basis for preventing relapse. What makes the second edition unique is that the format allows clinicians to apply recommended treatment approaches during different phases of the illness, with patients from the newly diagnosed to those in sustained remission. This book will serve as a useful resource for graduate students as well as more experienced clinicians."--Edward Altman, PsyD, Department of Psychiatry (Retired), University of Illinois at Chicago
"The second edition of this definitive work is even more useful than its predecessor. Focusing on techniques for patients at different stages of their illness and acceptance, this is a 'must' for all clinicians treating bipolar disorder. The best psychoeducational and cognitive-behavioral strategies for helping this population are described and integrated into a coherent framework. The book is full of carefully structured charts, case examples, and patient assignments that will enable clinicians to successfully employ these critically important treatment principles and practices."--Robert Morton Post, MD, Biological Psychiatry Branch, National Institute of Mental Health
"Two experts, including John Rush, one of the pioneers in CBT, have made an excellent book even better....This text is more user-friendly, and has extensive illustrative case material and descriptions of strategic (goal-focused) and technical interventions. The authors take the clinician through the course of the illness and recommend particular interventions for each stage or clinical manifestation of bipolar disorder. For the clinician and teacher of clinical issues, this should be a required text."/m-/Arthur Freeman, EdD, ABPP, Behavioral Science Book Service Advisory Board Member
"Has an impressively clear and comprehensive structure. A particular strength of the book is its extremely useful practical aids to therapy, with worksheets and a full treatment protocol included....This book is an approachable and clear presentation of CBT for bipolar disorder....A book that is clearly a comprehensive guide to treatment of bipolar disorder from the CBT framework, and which would serve any therapist extremely well in a multitude of settings, both psychological and in more medically oriented multi-disciplinary teams. As a resource for therapists specializing in bipolar disorder, or for those wondering how to apply their CBT skills to symptoms of depression and mania, this would be a valuable addition to any bookshelf."--Behavioral and Cognitive Psychotherapy
"The book is filled with illustrative case examples and material that provide an excellent introduction for the novice clinician....One of the most helpful sections of the book deals with false assumptions of the therapist....I found this book extremely helpful in adding new techniques to my therapeutic armamentarium. I recommend it highly for both the beginning and experience therapist." --Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic
"Basco and Rush provide an easy-to-follow and flexible set of techniques for treatment of bipolar disorder....Practitioners can pick and choose from a large array of cognitive and behavioral techniques as best fits the needs of the patient....For beginning clinicians and practitioners who prefer to work using a more structured approach, a treatment protocol is provided in the Appendix....The book is extremely user friendly....Vignettes are offered throughout the book to illustrate how to apply the techniques to different types of patients in different stages of the illness. Overall, the authors maintain a good balance between an optimistic stance about the power of cognitive-behavioral treatment for bipolar disorder and a realistic stance about the difficulties of working with this population."--Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Book Reviews
"This is a welcomed second edition of an already useful and comprehensive book....A meaningful summary of the common problems encountered during treatment and the appropriate interventions are described at the beginning of the book, which allows for easy identification of and rapid access to relevant chapters within the book. This is extremely useful....The style and language used is very clear and understandable. It makes for interesting reading and conveys the message without overcomplicating things....This book comes highly recommended. It is very readable, and can be read cover to cover or selected chapters at a time. It is practical and reality based, making it useful for the busy practicing clinician and providing a useful framework within which serious issues can be sensitively tackled. It is also well referenced for those wishing to gain a deeper understanding."--International Review of Psychiatry
"A truly practical resource grounded in a real-world context....A comprehensive guide to the treatment of bipolar disorder from the CBT framework, and which would serve any therapist extremely well in a multitude of settings, both psychological and in more medically oriented multidisciplinary teams. As a resource for therapists specializing in bipolar disorder, or for those wondering how to apply their CBT skills to symptoms of depression and mania, this would be a valuable addition to any bookshelf."--Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy
This book states its' purpose, limitations, and offers a lot of helpful information on how to prevent hypomania and mild depression from escalating to full major depression and manic episodes. I believe that the book has a lot to offer in communication skills for everyone. It is helpful not only for therapist but for those afflicted with manic-depressive illness and their family members.
This book should be read by anyone trying to optimize treatment of bipolar disorder through the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy. In fact it should be read both by patients and by therapists and possibly psychiatrists too. The book is well written, well organized, and fairly easy to understand. It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to surviving bipolar disorder- if the reader wants a comprehensive guide, see Torrey's "Surviving Manic Depression" and Miklowitz's "Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide". But for just learning about cognitive-behavioral therapy, this book is excellent. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".
Finally, a book on CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) for the rest of us! Everyone who deals with bipolar disorder will find Basco's work very helpful. I've read many books on CBT, including those by Ellis and his students -- they have great ideas, but they are not so easy to put into practice if you are cycling through the mood swings of manic depression. Basco customizes the CBT approach for bipolar and explains the process clearly. Multiple studies have shown this approach's usefulness. If you and your health care provider prefer a cognitive approach to help manage your bipolar symptoms, this book (now in paperback) is your best resource.
