Book Description

0131400398 978-0131400399 December 4, 1992 3 Sub
Explores the psychology of children with updated, revised and expanded coverage of the field. Providing you with the latest research findings and opinions of distinguished authorities, it covers four areas: history, theory and methods; infancy and developmental psychobiology; cognitive development; and socialization, personality and social development. Included are integrative summaries, new perspectives and insights, critical analyses and explications of deficiencies in existing data and theoretical orientations. Going beyond merely a simple encyclopedic review of accumulated knowledge--the author offers a source book that encourages sophisticated thinking about fundamental issues, the formulation of questions and hypotheses and, in the long run, more good research.

From the Publisher

This esteemed introductory treatment deals with the pertinent topics in the field of childhood cognitive development, including: highlights of intellectual growth during infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence; the developmental aspects of social cognition, perception, memory, and language; the theoretical approaches of Piaget, the Gibsons, information-processing psychologists, and more. The book follows four well-defined areas of study: 1) Introduction and major theories; 2) Chronological/age group coverage; 3) Major topics-social cognition; and 4) Major questions and problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent text on cognitive development, clear and to the point., October 22, 2006
I am a personal growth coach who studied in the areas of biology, biochemistry, physiology and psychology. I am familiar with neuroanatomy and the deeper workings of the brain. I also work one-to-one with clients and do public speaking on a variety of topics. Therefore, it is important for me to have a good understanding of development, especially cognitive development.

I have looked at a lot of books in this area and I find this to be one of the best general texts. The material is presented clearly and is easy to understand. While it has meaty concepts, they are delivered in a highly digestible form.

If you want to understand how the mind develops over time as a child ages, this is a good anchor book to have in your library. I also recommend the DEVELOPING MIND by Daniel Siegel. This is complimentary to this text and more up to date in many respects. It also brings in more neuroscience and less emphasis on cognition as such.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expensive and difficult, but rewarding!, January 15, 2005

This is my text book for Developmental Cognitive Psychology. Many of the references are within a few years of publication, but it also doesn't neglect Piaget.

2.0 out of 5 stars A very old book, September 24, 2005
The book is much older and has more highlights and notes than I@expect what an old book should be. Should be at cheaper price.
