"Known for crafting exquisite interiors boasting fresh, modern style, Eric Cohler is among the nation's most admired designers.... offering expert tips and advice, Cohler on Design encourages readers to 'define what inspires them and...to incorporate that inspiration into their homes.'" —Lonny

About the Author

ERIC COHLER established his own firm in 1991. Since then, House Beautiful has described Cohler as one of the 14 "best of the best" in the "next wave of designers in America," and in June 2010, he was named to Elle Decor's A-List of 30 top U.S. designers working today. He is featured regularly in Veranda, Traditional Home, New York Spaces, and also writes regularly for American Art Collector. Cohler holds an MA in Historic Preservation from Columbia University’s School of Architecture and a Certificate from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. In late 2010, he was named an Ambassador of Creativity and Spirituality to the G20 summit in Seoul, South Korea. In recent years, Cohler has expanded to include product design, such as furniture, rugs, lighting, and fabric—in fact, his Lee Jofa “Tyler Crewel” fabric was selected by the President and Mrs. Obama for the White House family dining room.

If you like eclectic interiors and want inspiration for how to create them, you should find this design book by Eric Cohler helpful. Known as "the mixmaster", Cohler combines classic design elements with modern, traditional with the unexpected, humble with grand and throws some alluring art into the mix. He feels we should have a relationship with what we own and enjoy the thrill of the hunt. He encourages you to take design field trips--or mini-grand tours--and enjoy the pursuit of what you love--see what strikes your eye and captures your heart. Some of the best pieces are in the back rooms of shops, Cohler advises. Design is about collecting and curating items you are passionate about, Cohler believes.

The chapter titles in this book summarize his design philosophy: Passion--Making your own grand tour--Curate your space--Live with what you love--The past is prologue. Then Cohler explains how to integrate these concepts into your design process.

Enjoy collecting what you love, says Cohler. What if we can't afford a Warhol or its equivalent? Don't worry--why not collect hand-painted snuff boxes which are just as interesting? Value pieces for their personality more than their actual value, he says. Have some conversation pieces in your home to keep it interesting, he advises. If you find, say, a couple of dining chairs you love at a flea market and want more, Cohler suggests you turn to a local artisan and have them reproduced. When Cohler and a client found two stylish mid-century brass stools in Paris, Cohler hired an artisan to create four more.

Cohler's interiors are fresh and one-of-a-kind as the charming and original room on the cover of this book illustrates. His rooms are arresting because they subtly combine unusual elements. It is thoughtful design.

Wow! Bought one book for me and then after reviewing, bought three more on amazon.....surprised anyone could show about every part of design, questions answered, & pushed diversity. I am English/traditional but he tweaks to blend with almost any persons style....it appears that he designs for the client, not his ego. Not everyone is Bill Gates.......but his look is rich and relaxed, formal and comfy. And at last one designer that says you can 'have things" vs. empty deserted homes.........in white! Keep the blend going, Eric. Cheers and thanks for his work being published.

For admirers of art, architecture or design, the new book "Cohler on Design" is a worthy addition to any bookshelf. Written by noted and masterful designer Eric Cohler, the book shows his keen ability to make a room come to life in a personal way that never feels staged or overly contrived. Cohler fluidly achieves just the right balance between design with an edge and what is livable in a home. His book provides striking images that show how classical beauty and modern art can work together in a fresh way. The book also offers up Cohler's lovely and personal journey through achieving his own style, which sets it apart from other design books. At the same time, "Cohler on Design" provides practical advice on how to bring a passion for style into one's own life. "Cohler on Design" inspires others to live creatively.

This is a fantastic book! This is one of those design books that you'll keep going back to for inspiration. This guy really knows what he's doing. There's just the right amount of text - but overall the book is chock full of pictures of beautiful interiors. His spaces are layered and inviting - you will be drooling over each page. What I really love about his work is how much thought and attention he puts into incorporating artwork into his projects. Also, the quality of the binding and production is wonderful.

Most of the time you buy these $40 plus books and thumb front to back in minutes...only lovin half the interiors, but this book is filled with knock out rooms from start to finish. Have already spied several schemes to steal for my own apartment. Dont walk...run and buy this book.

I like the cover so bought it but realized afterwards that many of the pictures are of the same house/apt. and are pictures of the author's own residences. I was expecting pictures of his projects and pictures that are not the same residence.
He seems to promote himself through his own residence.
