I've had this CD for a couple of years and still like it. I'm not a huge fan of this genre -- I'm more into techno/trance/dance/house these days -- but if you like interesting synth-heavy dark/goth industrial like such better-known bands as Xymox, Delerium (early), Front 242 have made at times you may like Spahn Ranch.I do have to add that I like "Architecture" better than "The Coiled One", and for some reason I didn't really appreciate or fully grok this CD until after I'd heard "Architecture" several times; then I got it. Funny how that it is... Anyway, this is a pretty good if not great CD, definitely on the moody/harsh/angry side. Maybe not 4 stars, but definitely more than 3 1/2.

As a big fan of industrial and electronic music I've been exposed to a large amount of good and bad albums. I count the Los Angeles based Spahn Ranch's "The Coiled One" in the good column. When I used to vend music at industrial and goth clubs I made a point to turn a few younger industrial music fans onto this album. (As an interesting aside, "Spahn Ranch" is also the name of the old western filming set that Charles Manson's gang was based from.)My favorite tracks (which you can listen to) include "Locusts" and "Compression Test". Locusts is fairly upbeat and aggressive, while Compression Test is a much slower and measured track that is more reminiscent of older Belgian-styled electronic body music (EBM). Others have suggested listening to "Heretic's Fork", and though it is not my favorite track, it is still a good track and very representative of this album. Please listen to all three tracks and decide for yourself if you like this album. Other tracks like "The Judas Cradle" can be best described as good guitar based industrial akin to KMFDM or Denmark's Birmingham 6. Overall, this album represents a good mix of guitars and electronics and non distorted vocals.

I had a tape of this album left in my car and it didnt leave the player for a year. It is a fantastic piece of work, with great production and stunningly written, arranged and performed songs. A massive slab of industrial/techno/metal/goth which should get a lot more play in clubs than it does. Superb.

Got this CD back in 99, and it's a cool CD, but they could have kept that bonus track. It's just creepy... Oh well Heretic's Fork, and Vortex roq'd 5 stars anyway... Want some real fun.. Buy this CD then check out parts assembled solely... Good Remixes

One of my all time fav cd's from back in the day. Every song here was ripe and juicy, especially the first few. I found this cd used about 6 or 7 years ago and since then it doesn't even seem to exist anymroe. What a shame.

Industrial classic,
By Glenn W. Whitehead "glezzery" (VA Beach, VA) - See all my reviews

The Coiled One is one of the very best Industrial Albums ever released. Spahn Ranch is a strange band. They started off as a Noise/Industrial group, with distorted vocals. This album was peak of there industrial period and features what sets this band apart from all others: awesome experimental Keyboards and Drum Programming and maybe the best singer in Industrial, period.Athan Maroulis has a clear stable smooth and dark voice. Vortex and Locusts simply are Industrial Hall Of Fame tunes and the album as a whole hammers and swirls away. There is no end to exciting and strange samples and effects and the beat will get your feet tapping. The songs have a dark goth quality, even when bubbling and hammering away. Spahn Ranch had serious talent. Later, this two move into Electro/Techno territory but bring along all the goods. Architecture is a great album more in the Gothic/Electro area but still fascinating. The Coiled One is a must have album for Industrial fans. Too bad these guys are Out of Print and there probably won't be a big Resurgence of Dark Industrial music.

This is one of my all time favorite EBM cd's. Every track is excellent. The Coiled One is definetly a desert island disc for any electro industrial fan! Check out Heretics Fork, one of the all time classic EBM /club tracks.

This is hands down on of the 10 greatest industrial records ever. Bands like Covenant and VNV Nation would be lost without this blueprint.
