Book Description

The coinage of the Indian Sultanates is a very important primary source for helping us understand the political and economic history of much of what is now India, Pakistan and Bangladesh from the beginning of the thirteenth century AD until the seventeenth century when the last of the sultanates was absorbed into the Mughal empire. The right of sikka, i.e., the right to strike coins, was one of the two jurdically recognised expressions of the right of the ruler to sovereignty, and it was a right that was jealously guarded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best catalog for this series, November 13, 2006
This review is from: The Coins of the Indian Sultanates: Covering the Area of Present-Day India, Pakistan and Bangladesh (Hardcover)
As a comprehensive catalog of the coins of the various Indian sultanates, this work not only supersedes the separate museum catalogs and other specialized works on Delhi, Gujarat, Bengal and so on, it also far surpasses the earlier "comprehensive" catalog by Dilip Rajgor. The end of the book includes a Rajgor conversion table in case your collection is catalogued using his numbers. Inscriptions are given in Romanized transliteration, but are not translated. Almost every type is photographed. This will be the standard reference for quite some time.
