This should have been in school as part of standard cultural information. Moreover, it would have made math, history and several other disciplines much more interesting.

Numismatics is the study and/or collecting of coins, paper money, tokens, metals, orders and decorations, and similar objects. A numismatist is one who has a comprehensive knowledge of numismatics. A collector isn't necessarily (indeed, seldom is) a numismatist: numismatist needn't be a collector. He can be an archaeology associate, the curator of the national or international collection, a dealer, or simply a serious student of numismatics.

This book makes for many hours of fascinating reading and should not be confused with catalogs or "how to collect" volumes. Many of the questions than it answers to questions you forgot to ask and should have asked.

This comprehensive is the book is it cannot be all things to all people. Therefore, one of the glaring missing subjects is that of Notgeld. For this, you must read books that are more specialized. However, I would recommend this book before you start collecting, if you think of expanding your collection, or if you just want to talk to collectors.

Reading this book can indeed start you down the road to numismatics.
