Book Description

November 1, 1994 The old photographs series
Since the development of photography in the mid-nineteenth century, the camera has been used as a tool of both discovery and preservation. Photographs bring alive our image of the past, and can open a floodgate of memories and nostalgia or inspire curiosity and a

sense of history. Collected in this intriguing visual history are more than 200 photographs that bring to life the history of Colby College from 1813 to the sesquicentennial in 1963. From President Chaplin's voyage up the Kennebec River to the relocation of Colby to Mayflower Hill, it focuses on the events, and more importantly on the people that have defined Colby's history. Using material from the Colby College Archives, Anestes Fotiades leads us on a unique journey into the past, where the faculty, staff, and students of Colby are remembered with reverence and pride; people like President J. Seelye Bixler, Webster

"Bugsy" Chester, Julian Taylor, and many others. The photographs have been chosen to provide an accurate history as well as a delightful voyage of nostalgia into the heritage of one of Maine's most progressive institutions of higher education.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bad title, good photos, March 23, 2010
This review is from: Colby College: A Venture Of Faith (Paperback)
Despite the title, "A Venture Of Faith" is not a religious treatise, but rather the pictorial history of a small liberal arts college in Maine. While Colby was originally called the Maine Literary and Theological Institution, it was renamed shortly thereafter: first to Waterville College (1821), then to its current name following a Civil War-era donation by Boston merchant and Maine native Gardner Colby.

Hundreds of archival photographs, most reproduced in very good quality. Shots of the campus dating from 1856 (the oldest known photograph of Colby) to 1963. While documenting the evolution of the physical plant is not without merit, I found much more interesting the captures of campus life. Surely here we see stark differences to current day students. Example: The stereograph showing two members of the class of 1881 reading in their room, wearing smoking jackets! There's even a photo of the original White Mule.

Publisher is actually Alan Sutton (Maine). I believe they put out several titles under "The Old Photographs Series."
