5.0 out of 5 stars Knowing the Man Loving the book
I've owned many Pitbulls in my time, All were great dogs but I did'nt know much about my own dogs back ground. I've recently recieved a puppy from Louis Colby and i'm very glad that I did. Having the book shows me what kind of History my dog has. I knew alot about the breed before I got the book but not as much as I know now. The book goes into great detail of how the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good historical reference of great breed
This book has many great pictures of famous pit bulls from the early part of the last century. I enjoyed reading this book for some of the historical aspects of the breed, but felt that the focus on the breed was too narrow. I know that the book is about J.P. Colby and the dogs that he produced. But I would have liked the book to have had some more input about other...

5.0 out of 5 stars Knowing the Man Loving the book, May 10, 2000
This review is from: Colby's Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier (Hardcover)
I've owned many Pitbulls in my time, All were great dogs but I did'nt know much about my own dogs back ground. I've recently recieved a puppy from Louis Colby and i'm very glad that I did. Having the book shows me what kind of History my dog has. I knew alot about the breed before I got the book but not as much as I know now. The book goes into great detail of how the breed has come along in all these years. It also puts the debate of the Amstaff and the APBT being to different dogs to rest. This book does cover lots of dog fighting history, keep in mind that 100 years ago dog fighting was acceptable and a common practice. I only live about 15 minutes away from Louis and I have gone out to his house many of times, each time I go we talk about the "New" sporting of these great animals "Weight pulling". So please dont think that Louis only promotes dog fighting,he doesn'nt,he appreciates them as they are and he really enjoys going to the pull contests, he much like me will never deny the dogs history. If your a history buff like I am this book is a must have for your collection and who knows...you might find a decendant of your dog in his book.

5.0 out of 5 stars For The History Lover - A Real Find., December 19, 1999
This review is from: Colby's Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier (Hardcover)
Louis Colby and Diane Jessup did a great job with this, and many thanks are due to them for bringing this wonderful information public. I think many people interested in this breed enjoy the history aspect, and this book will more than please you if that is your interest. Lots of pictures of dogs from the past. Of special interest: one can see how little the true pit bull has changed over the past 100+ years, unlike breeds which are ruined by the show ring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Telling It As It Is, January 5, 2000

I am the proud owner of a pure Colby APBT. So, first I would like to thank the Colby family (even beyond JP) for keeping such accurate records of their history. Few breeds have as rich a history as the APBT. And even fewer bloodlines have records that are as accurate as the Colby bloodlines are. Thus, this book is very special in that it tells the history of a very wonderful breed of dog that is too commonly misunderstood. And completely reports the history of the Colby dogs which are undoubtedly the most influential dogs in the breed. For anyone interested in truly grasping the truth behind the APBT for themselves, this book is a must have. It is a keeper that any APBT fancier should have in their library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply, the best!!!, February 13, 2001

Next to the word "Best" in the dictionary, you see a picture of a Colby dog. That is if this were a perfect world:) I just bought a beautiful little Colby dog from Louis's son Jack in Texas. It is the best investment I've ever made. I have read Louis's book so many times, it barely stays together anymore. This is a book I feel everyone should read, even sceptics. The history of the breed couldn't have came from a more accurate source. The Colby Dogs are the purest dogs out there, in fact the only pit bulls that have beyond all doubt a truthfull pedigree. This is a MUST READ BOOK!!! I thought I knew all about Pit Bulls until I read this book. Find out for yourself. Read the book And you will know why I Love this breed so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book for the best breed, January 20, 2001

I own a lot of apbt books and this is by far the best. I own a Colby dog and it is exciting to be able to trace your dog back to the late 1800's. This book gives different views of the dogs from past to present, once a dog of choice by many people, and said to be the "all american dog" and now as the media damaged "People Biter." Tons of info if you like the breed, some helpful ideas on conditioning and diet. An excellent book, I'd recommend it to any apbt owner or someone who just wants to learn alittle about the "Dog with a bad name."

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK ON A LINE OF GREAT DOGS AND APBT'S IN GENERAL, November 24, 1998
By
This review is from: Colby's Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier (Hardcover)
This book it truly great. It goes into detail on the history of the breed and how it developed. Nice pictures and informative pedigrees on some of the best dogs of all time. It showed me something I never knew or even guessed about my dog with Ch Art blood. An honest book on a truly great and honest dog. Highly reccomended. It might be hard for some to read due to the names of so many famous dogs. Some people might not know who or what thew are talking about. It is not a beginner book. Many many years of knowledge has gone into this book, and it shows.

5.0 out of 5 stars The one who controls the past, controls the future..., February 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Colby's Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier (Hardcover)
This book is definitely an instant classic. Anyone seeking information on the APBT breed, and early SBT breed, will find it here. Colby's own archive of oldtime pictures is used freely throughout the book and therein lies much of it's value. The reader is sure to feel a closeness to the APBT breed as well as the Colby family of dogs. Some readers will probably complain about the lack of information on present-day greats, but this isn't the subject of the book. However, I'm sure most readers will appreciate the old photographs and stories to the point where they want a Colby APBT just to feel that they own a part of history.
Definitely a "must read" for any serious student of the APBT and SBT breeds!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent look back in time..., December 4, 2000

This book is an excellent look back in time at the bulldog - if you like reading about the dog's history, this is a MUST HAVE! It's well written and showcases some of the excellent Colby dogs, virtually unchanged after 100 years! The pictures, some of which can be seen on the Colby website, are great.

Lou Colby has done well in preserving the bloodlines and dogs his father began with so long ago. I loved it and plan to buy my first Colby bulldog in 2001. Thanks Lou.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well- written History of The Family and Their Dogs, January 28, 2003
By
Jimrat198 (Sheridan, IN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Colby's Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier (Hardcover)
When I first opened this book, I was dissapointed, thinking it was about the breed in general. However, after a few pages, I could not put it down. This well-written book is not only about these misunderstood dogs, but a fascinating history of a family who is obviously devoted to producing the finest animals possible. There are litterally hundreds of excellent photos, reproduced letters, and an honest appraisal of a time gone by when dog-fighting was an accepted practice. As an owner of two APBT's which weigh 70 lbs. I was surprised to learn that the dogs of the last 100 years seldom weighed over 40 pounds. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in pit dogs, dog breeding or history in general. A must read.

absolutely awesome book for anyone interested in true history of the breed, unlike the stratton books that have a tendency to believe that the breeds history started with them and/or only give credit to those they are familiar with. worth every penny at twice the price. this is as close to the "horses mouth" that you can get without raising j.p. from the grave!!
