Editorial Reviews

In Cold Blood is the powerful, true story of a callous murder, based upon the best-selling novel by Truman Capote. A prosperous and respected Kansas farmer, his wife and his two teenage children are wantonly and brutally slaughtered. The murderers are two mindless ex-convict drifters: Perry Smith (Robert Blake) and Dick Hickock (Scott Wilson). Neither of the men are sane enough to regret their crime. The story penetrates the inner workings of the criminals minds as it follows their purposeless meandering through Mexico and the United States in evasion of the law. After more than a year of wandering, the hunted men are finally caught, tried and in a dramatic conclusion condemned to hang.

5.0 out of 5 stars even WITHOUT bonus features this is a five star movie!, October 18, 2010
This review is from: In Cold Blood [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Okay..
I felt obliged to balance the first reviewer who is docking this blu ray for lack of special features.
lets get real, its a five star movie , in fact one of the greats and we are lucky to have it on blu ray. Most films of this age are not available in this format nor ever will be.

Where do we start? The incredible script and direction of Richard Brooks? The brilliant cinematography by legendary Conrad Hall? The acting of Scott Wilson, Robert Blake, John Forsythe? Lets not forget the jazzy and perfect score (excuse the pun) by Quincy Jones. Based on the equally legendary book by Truman Capote this adaption is nothing less than a five star film and it looks spectacular in Blu Ray.

Would it be great to have an interview with Wilson or Blake...sure..but Blake is a very dicey subject these days and I can't imagine any studio really wanting to pay him to appear on camera for such. Many of the main participants are deceased...so what do we have ...talking head experts discussing it? There are loads of resources on Capote and DVDs about him aplenty. There is a version available of this which is housed in a case with the film Capote Capote/In Cold Blood [Blu-ray] There is even a perhaps better film about Capote and In Cold Blood Infamous

The price of this blu ray is under $15....so at that price to have this movie looking this good I can't believe any true film lover would knock a star off for lack of "extras". I could understand if they were asking $30.

This is a great film, featuring absolutely riveting performances and accomplished by film makers who are cinema royalty.

If you love this movie you will be pleased with this version...if you have not seen it you will be in for a rare treat.. from the first time we see Blakes face lit by the match he strikes...the viewer realizes that they are in the hands of true expert film makers and its 2 hours and 14 minutes well spent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent film version of Truman Capote's "nonfiction novel", January 5, 2011

Both the DVD and the Blu-ray of this black-and-white film are fine for video.

Watch this 1967 movie before or after seeing "Capote" or "Infamous" to get a different view of the book that sparked all the interest in the author and his relationships with the killers of a Kansas farm family.

Writer-director Richard Brooks tried to duplicate Capote's efforts to tell the story as realistically as possible. According to the new book "Tough as Nails: The Life and Films of Richard Brooks" (available from amazon.com), Brooks filmed in nearly all the actual places where events occurred, from the Kansas City bus depot where the killers met up to the court room where they were tried and sentenced to hang. (Half the jury was made up of jurors in the real trial.)

Brooks even paid $15,000 to rent the house where the four Clutter family members were murdered; he recreated the killings in the rooms where they took place. Creepy but effective. One place they couldn't film was the Kansas state prison. Instead, they went to a Colorado prison.

Brooks resisted studio demands that he film in color (he believed B&W would be better at getting across the element of fear) and refused to cast box-office stars like Paul Newman and Steve McQueen as the killers. Instead, the movie is anchored by the standout performances of Scott Wilson (as Dick Hickok) and Robert Blake (as Perry Smith). Brooks succeeds in explaining the murder but not making excuses for the killers. He does manage to slip in his view that the death penalty is wrong or at least solves nothing.

Oscar nominations went to Brooks for writing and directing and to Conrad Hall for his B&W cinematography. (The prison scene with Blake recounting an unhappy relationship with his father is a classic of cinematography.) Quincy Jones also scored a nomination for his score. Brooks directed 24 movies and wrote all but three of them; this may well be his masterpiece.
