5.0 out of 5 stars Two Thunders in One: Great Studio Tracks, Great Live Tracks, February 14, 2004

"efa" (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In Cold Blood (Audio CD)
On this CD, the first five songs are rough, rocking studio tracks; "Green Onions" especially showcases the dueling Les Paul grit of Walter Lure and Johnny Thunders. The remaining songs are various live tracks, also from 1982. Johnny's customary banter is thick-tongued, funny, and happy; his guitar and the audience sound equally fried. And again, the inimitable Walter Lure keeps Johnny on course. The result is wonderful...some of my favorite live tracks, including exceptional renditions of "Louie Louie" and "Gloria!" As an extra bonus, Nina Antonia, Johnny's official biographer, wrote the liner notes. In all, a great CD for any Thunders fan. Originally a double LP released in 1982.

4.0 out of 5 stars Would be Five, if it Wasn't For the Dolls..., November 27, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: In Cold Blood (Audio CD)
While this music maintains the same gloriously primal and echoy guitar rifs that Johnny employed as a member of the New York Dolls, it is for me impossible to hear him without experienceing a feeling something like disappointment based on the purist sentimentality of "how dare he pursue a post-Dolls career." If he had begun this way I would give him five stars, but the mental hurtle required to shrug off Dolls associations is for me impossible to achieve, and therefore anything he did after 1975 just doesn't seem "right." Regardless, these songs are still chock full of the glorious meat that everyone from Andy Warhol to Guns n' Roses knew Johnny to be capable of.
