The Mynah Birds signed to Motown in 1966 and recorded an album for them, but it was never released.

In the late 70s, James signed to Motown again, this time as a solo artist, and helped… Read more in Amazon's Rick James Store

3.0 out of 5 stars "U Bring The Freak Out" made me a Rick James fan, September 9, 2004
This review is from: Cold Blooded (Audio CD)
Watching Rick James lip-sync "U Bring The Freak Out" on a 1983 television show instantly made me a fan. Shortly after, I purchased COLD BLOODED, the first of many Rick James albums I would own.

As I write this, the recent news of Rick James's August 2004 death has saddened music fans worldwide. Unfortunately, the media still prefers to publicize the man's personal problems rather than celebrate the funky grooves to which he treated us. Here's hoping James's music will outlast the words of those idiots.

And maybe the untimely death will lead to COLD BLOODED's reissue, as the only Rick James titles that seem to be available are hits collections. Along with the aforementioned "U Bring The Freak Out," COLD BLOODED features freaky, funky numbers such as the "P.I.M.P. The S.I.M.P.," "New York Town," "Cold Blooded," and the classic duet with Smokey Robinson, "Ebony Eyes."

I have every Rick James album except FIRE IT UP and GARDEN OF LOVE. Those aside, I recommend these James titles to the curious: COME GET IT; STREET SONGS; THROW DOWN; GLOW; THE FLAG; URBAN RAPSODY; and, of course, COLD BLOODED.

Long live the music of Rick James.
