"U Bring The Freak Out" made me a Rick James fan,
By
This review is from: Cold Blooded (Audio CD)
Watching Rick James lip-sync "U Bring The Freak Out" on a 1983 television show instantly made me a fan. Shortly after, I purchased COLD BLOODED, the first of many Rick James albums I would own.
As I write this, the recent news of Rick James's August 2004 death has saddened music fans worldwide. Unfortunately, the media still prefers to publicize the man's personal problems rather than celebrate the funky grooves to which he treated us. Here's hoping James's music will outlast the words of those idiots. And maybe the untimely death will lead to COLD BLOODED's reissue, as the only Rick James titles that seem to be available are hits collections. Along with the aforementioned "U Bring The Freak Out," COLD BLOODED features freaky, funky numbers such as the "P.I.M.P. The S.I.M.P.," "New York Town," "Cold Blooded," and the classic duet with Smokey Robinson, "Ebony Eyes." I have every Rick James album except FIRE IT UP and GARDEN OF LOVE. Those aside, I recommend these James titles to the curious: COME GET IT; STREET SONGS; THROW DOWN; GLOW; THE FLAG; URBAN RAPSODY; and, of course, COLD BLOODED. Long live the music of Rick James.

Cold Funk by da Kang of Funk,
This review is from: Cold Blooded [CASSETTE] (Audio Cassette)
the title cut alone is ice cold still almost 25 years later. that synth Groove and that Beat ain't no joke. i still use that quote in my dictionary book. Freeze!! that is Rick getting Gangsta on a track. elsewhere U Bring the Freak out of me. Ebony eyes with Smokey Robinson has a gospel feel. very soulful and deep. Pimp the Simp with Melle Mel is a banger. Mary had a Pimp is cold and those Stone City Band Horns are bringing it. Rick James never faked the funk and he never had to sell the Funk in a Newspaper. Rick brought the Jams that you hurried on down to the record store for. this was a good mixture of styles and vibes. Rick Vocally brought it. Unity with Billy Dee Williams was cool as well.Rick switxhed up and changed his sound and came back even colder. nobody could switch up the Funk like Rick. all of his trademark grooves, arrangements and stylings are timeless. the Brother was a Musical Genius.

Rick had his ups & downs concerning his music as you may read in many articles written by the common critic on the web. An example would be the trashing he received for the "Garden Of Love" album, which was coined "a corny, ballad ridden disaster" by one source for which I won't mention. It's called diversity people. At any rate, "Cold Blooded" was similar review wise. I recently bought the vinyl and after witnessing the chronological order of his releases, I must say I was (am) impressed! It's still Rick (unlike "wonderful") plus a little help from a drum machine with a lot of cool guests like Smokey and Billy D. (Williams that is) I just can't help but wonder what Motown's issue is with re-releasing allot of these classic albums. I guess the money is in the cheap "best of" discs that aren't even true to the original cuts. At any rate, great album and on a personal note, sounds better on vinyl! Plus, who wants to spend $130 for a cd anyway!
P.S. J. L LaRegina, after reading your review of "Cold Blooded" I'd like you to know I have "Garden" and "Fire It Up" on cd from vinyl if you'd like to trade! Post reply

I think the album "Cold Blooded was one of his best albums. Why isn't "Tell Me (What You Want) with Billy Dee Williams included in his MP3 collection. I would like to buy this selection.

Very Good Album,
This review is from: Cold Blooded (Vinyl)
Rick james switched up his sound and got into the cold world of Synths and Programmed beats which he dominated on here. the title track was Cold and still is Funky. Rick dropped the cool vocals and it was on point. ebony eyes with Smokey Robinson is a strong Gospel soulful song that highlights both of there voices. Pimp the Simp with Melle Mel is a stone cold Jam. Billy Dee Williams is on the album as well. Rick throws down on the Synth Funk. He ruled the Funk back in the day.

tha Cold Hard Funk,
This review is from: Cold Blooded (Audio Cassette)
Rick James ruled 80's funk and he was a unstoppable force period. the title track alone had us back in the day playing freeze tag to it and stopping when Rick said Freeze!! that synth and groove was cold then and still is. U Bring the freak out of me contained that cold New Wave funk stylings that Rick made hip and cool. Ebony Eyes was the slow jam which showed true love and appreciation for Beautiful Black Women World-Wide. a classic from Rick James with fellow Legend Smokey Robinson. Pimp the Simp was one of the early R&B/Rap Songs and it is a Classic. Melle Mel is on the Hook with the Stone city Horns blowing. Mary had a P.I.M.P that is still a cold Jam and still is raw and Gutter. Rick James's Genius showcased how he went from Horn Based funk to the Cold Synth Based Groves. Rick James couldn't be stopped when he Brought the Grooves. Classic from the Genius that was Rick James.
