Cold City Bicycling

A Listmania! list by Bartok Kinski "A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything." (Prague)
The list author says: "Bicycling in Cold winter Weather

In colder weather, especially in winter months and at higher altitudes, it is important to keep your hands, face and ears protected from the elements like wind, snow and rain.

Warm, Comfortable Clothing. The first type of Clothing is for warmth, the second to block the wind/rain.

Jackets: Cold Weather - For warmth, use polypro or any one of its cousins (thermax, caprilene, etc), polyester fleece, or wool. To keep the wind off you, simple non-stretchy nylon is all you need.

Dress Right: Layers

For windy and/or snowy conditions, the ears should be covered using a head band or a balaclava designed for cycling made from fleece that will fit under a helmet.

Footwear: Cold Weather Boots/shoes or two layers of socks. Toe covers and shoe covers are helpful if you wear biking shoes; if you don't, any footwear that keeps you warm and dry will do.

Bicycle Maintenance: Winter Cleaning (relubricate your bicycle's chain to help prevent rust).

Dress in Layers!

wear fleece or fabric that retains heat

Never cycle when it's too icy or temperatures get severely cold.

Things you MAY Need:

Bike LED Headlight, Booties, Headbands, Skullcaps, Waterproof Jacket, Waterproof Pants, Waterproof Rain Gear, Bicycle Fenders, Bike Helmet Covers, Bike Rear light/Flasher, Biking Gloves, Long-sleeved Jackets, Goggles or Safety Glasses.

Cold weather cycling is fun but Safety is important.

Imparts important bicycle safety lessons.

from ghostbikes.org: Ghost Bikes are small and somber memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit on the street. A bicycle is painted all white and locked to a street sign near the crash site, accompanied by a small plaque. They serve as reminders of the tragedy that took place on an otherwise anonymous street corner, and as quiet statements in support of cyclists' right to safe travel.

Good luck to you all, and hope to see you in the future."
