Book Description

Worldwide Library Mysteries March 1, 2004
Frozen Stiff

When the frozen body of Cheryl Latham, stepdaughter of a prominent Toronto politician, is found with a bullet through her heart, overworked, underpaid homicide detective Barry Gilbert inherits the case. The bizarre nature of the crime itself -- apparently the woman was shot after she froze to death -- and the divergent clues do not bode well for a quick and tidy solution.

Who trashed the victim's apartment and what was this person looking for? Why did the intruder kill her parrot? Odder still, Cheryl was never seen leaving her building on the lobby security videotape -- so how did she end up on the dock? Add a large sum of stolen money and a dead sister into the equation and Gilbert is tackling a crime filled with dark secrets, dangerous relations and a killer convinced he can get away with murder.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This convoluted mystery is crippled by hackneyed dialogue and labored clue placement, and a less-than-compelling hero. Toronto cop Barry Gilbert investigates when the frozen body of Cheryl Latham is found on a city street. Although there's a gunshot wound in chest, the cause of death was hypothermia. A dead parrot is found in Latham's apartment. Also uncovered in Cheryl's life is a wealthy husband, a stepfather who had died under suspicious circumstances years before, and various trailer-trash stepbrothers. Another stepfather is a powerful politician who may have been the link connecting her to a money laundering racket. Gilbert discovers that Cheryl was beaten up as a child, and that her last romantic liaison appears to have been with a private security cop who was once Gilbert's partner. This information rolls out in workmanlike fashion, though keeping the extended family members straight is something of a chore; weary readers will care little for the revelations that come with an airport shoot-out and lead to the case's resolution.

From Library Journal

Toronto detectives Barry Gilbert and Joe Lombardo face the grim task of finding the murderer of a cabinet official's stepdaughter. Their job is made all the more daunting by subzero temperatures, the official's uncaring attitude, and his determination to cut Homicide's budget by 18 percent. Despite political, departmental, and public pressure, Gilbert and Lombardo deliver, uncovering the dead woman's complicated family ties and a well-hidden past of physical abuse. Crisp, purposeful prose, meaningful subplots, and strong, effective use of location make this an excellent procedural.
