Review

... thanks to Professor Robert Janosov, the story of Charles Stegmaier and how he developed one of the largest brewing operations in the nation is now preserved for posterity in an affordabe, easy-to-read, book. -- Citizens' Voice, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Sept 28, 1997

...welcomes the arrival of Cold & Gold from the Poconos, written by a local history professor. The book traces the history of Stegmaier from the arrival of the founder from Germany in 1849, through its success and two failures in 117 years of brewing, and its current resurrection as a federal office building... The book is illustrated with 32 pictures of the brewery complex, the Stegmaier Hotel, interior shots of the brew house, and even old coasters. It's a delightful book on regional and architectural history and arrives at a significant time in the history of the Wilkes-Barre Stegmaier brewery. -- American Breweriana Journal, Nov/Dec, 1997.

Cold & Gold from the Poconos covers the history of the Stegmaier Brewery in Wilkes-Barre. Chockfull of interesting tidbits of information and some really great photos, it would make a great gift for any beer lover/or history buff. -- The Weekender, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Dec. 18, 1997

3.0 out of 5 stars Cold & Gold from the Poconos: A Review from a Stegmaier, May 10, 2001

This review is from: Cold & Gold from the Poconos: A History of the Stegmaier Brewing Company, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania (Paperback)
Janosov's effort in documenting the history of the Stegmaier Brewery is admirable. The book, especially those passages relating to the early history of the company and the actual brewing process, was well-researched and interesting. I was, however, disappointed with the lack of attention to the history of the 1920s-1970s. Those years were simply glossed over. In actuality, they were arguably the most important - and at times tumultuous - years for both the brewery and the family. Some detail by Janosov concerning the family, a la Ron Chernow, would have made the book that much more interesting. There are enough Stegmaiers still around who could have, and would have, happily given the professor a plethora of stories.
