Editorial Reviews

Review

Reviews for the Dragoneer Saga:

"The Royal Dragoneers was deemed one of the Top 10 indie fantasy releases of 2010 by Fantasy Book Critic, and was listed in the first ever Publishers Weekly Indie Select issue in Dec. 2010.   It was also nominated for The Locus Poll 2011. It has been as high as #2 in the fantasy top 100 at Amazon.com."
-- Digital Wizard Inc.

The action is fast and furious, and the novel has the author's trademark twists on the traditional storyline and keeps one guessing where it will go... discovery and magic, written in the exuberant style of the author which is familiar from The Sword and the Dragon. It is a fun book that I heartily recommend.
-- Fantasy Book Critic

An exciting step into a mythic world of awe-inspiring escapade, wild battles, exciting characters. Action is fast paced, satisfying in quantity and moves the reader at a brisk pace from page to page at a breathless tempo
--MJ Hollingshead Book Review

Mathias is a master at characterization. The dragons are magnificent in the story. I also enjoyed the characters of Zah and Jenka. The plot is intricately woven with twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing. The story has a mythical quality. Fans of fantasy will not want to miss this one.
-- Readers Favorite Awards

"You've (Mathias) already achieved much, much more than so many people who like to think of themselves as writers."
-- @Gollancz The Deputy Publishing Director of SF, Fantasy & Horror list of the Orion Publishing Group.

About the Author

M.R. Mathias rose from unknown to award-winning, best-selling author at a pace most authors can only dream about. He is a prolific writer of epic fantasy novels, novellas, and short stories. Despite his busy writing, publishing, and promotional schedule Mathias continues to aid his fellow indie authors by posting about their books at Twitter and Facebook etc.
He shared his considerable knowledge of self-promotion in publishing The First Ten Steps. The book has become an important indie guide for navigating the often murky waters of using social media sites to get your eBook in front of avid readers.
Mathias has taken cross promotion to a new level in his "Indie Kindy" giveaways where he gives away a FREE Kindle Touch and or Kindle Fire loaded with independently published books. These events create a great deal of interest for the authors involved and to independently published books as a whole.
It is a pleasure working with M.R. Mathias and watching his amazing run at the top of the Amazon best seller lists.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Dragoneers Saga Continues - Don't miss it! December 20, 2011
Format:Paperback
M. R. Mathias has certainly got a way with a story twist as he picks up the action in "The Dragoneers Part II:" Cold Hearted Son of a Witch. The second in a trilogy, this work allows Mathias to slow from the first installment's break-neck speed and allows the reader to really come to grips with the world surrounding them: Dragons, witches, sorcerers, kings, battles, and magic.

Dragonners II also takes the reader to a new level of understanding of the characters, especially young Jenka who grows to manhood while learning Zah's power as a sorcerer and as a woman. Motivations are somewhat limited to survival and conquest, but character development continues to grow.

In this land of trolls and danger, Jenka's dragon, Jade plays a larger part in the evolution of the characters and the direction of the story. Eventually, the impending Saraxian Confliction brings the reader to a new light: these travelers are true Dragoneers, and Mathias molds as real a fantasy land as possible into his exciting, fast-paced saga, the saga of the Dragoneers.

"Cold Hearted Son of a Witch" also brings Mathias' humor into this high-fantasy mix. While a bit heavy-handed, it brings fun to the surface and allows the characters to grown into well-rounded features of the story. The pacing is good, slightly slowed from "The Royal Dragoneers," and the author's own enjoyable, distinctive style still shines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Imaginations Review of Cold-Hearted Son of a Witch September 2, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Whenever a new M.R. Mathias book releases, I can't wait to read it. And lucky for me, I am usually one of the first. He is easily one of the most consistent writers I have ever encountered during my many years of reading. Consistency is a great thing to have when you are a writer. He has the ability to turn out book after book that is of the utmost quality and that never wavers. And he has done it again with Cold-Hearted Son of a Witch.

The author has said to me that this is a transitional book and that's why it's shorter than the rest. That may be true, but it sure didn't make it any less important. The story continues here from the first book, and it's just as exciting and animated as The Royal Dragoneers was. Listen. I am not a fantasy fan. At least not a high-fantasy fan. It's true that I don't have a lot of experience with high-fantasy, but I can't help but love this series. I love these dragons. And I love their riders.

The plot is paced well and the action jumps off the page. It was completely exciting and very difficult to put down. It usually takes me a little bit of time to read through a M.R. Mathias novel, but I finished this one in a few hours. I just had to know what happened next. And the book is also full of dry humor and wit, which is something that I really enjoy. I love laughing out loud when I read and I really adore the author's sense of humor. I think it's great.

I've reviewed more than enough of his books now, and I fear that at this point anything I say will sound like a broken record. I think all of my reviews for M.R. Mathias books sound the same! But I can't help it, because they are all really good and I can't help but repeat myself. There are only so many good things you can say about an author before you start running out of words.

Second in M.R. Matthias' teen fantasy epic, The Dragoneers Saga, Cold-Hearted son of a witch picks up the story at the close of The Royal Dragoneers . With so many characters and a well-drawn world so thoroughly imagined and described, it's probably best to start the story with book one. But eager readers, willing to wait to learn who's who, will jump into book two without difficulty. Pleasingly, all the characters are there, teenagers growing older at a convincing rate, and even young March from the author's short novella The First Dragoneer plays a part, his arrival adding even greater breadth to the world that carries the tale.

There's a king inhabiting a sorcerer's body, a sleeping prince, young would-be lovers wondering how to combine commitment to cause with commitment to each other, friendship, dragons, betrayal, and delightfully real relationships in this novel. The combination of immediate and long-term threat is nicely portrayed with all its conflicting interests, as are the problems of everyday needs during earth-shattering danger, making the characters very real and relatable. The author's descriptions bring the world to life, and his skill with battle scenes and their gruesome aftermath is masterful. Wars fought in this world hurt; friends die, and those left behind deal with grief while riding on to save the survivors.

Genuine, gritty, well-imagined, with pleasing reality and humor seasoning fantasy and fear, this second book fulfills all the promise of the first, and more, leaving me eager to move on to book three and glad I've had the chance to revisit the series.

Disclosure: I received a free ecopy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! October 16, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I am not a man for words. However, I will attempt to give this book the type of review it deserves.

The story continues right where The Royal Dragoneers. Again, Mathias brings his talent full circle. The book took me less than two days to read this book given my schedule. I can not wait for the third book to be released, I am sure it will end in an epic fashion. The fantasy and lore in this book is well thought of, and put together. I know that this may sound a bit geekish but it makes me really want to get a dragon and fly through the clouds as well!

Thank you again Mr. Mathias

From the Author
The jewel you see glowing in the ring in my old authors photo isn't really a jewel at all. It is the crystallized tear of a real dragon. In my novel "The Royal Dragoneers" you might find the moment where this wonderfully magical tear drop fell from a green dragons eye. It hardened on its way down to land in a mess of troll corpses that the dragon was laying on.

My grandfather died before I was born, but the ring was given to me by my mother, after my grandmother recently died. My grandfather had apparently won it in a poker game near the Red River between Texas and Oklahoma sometime in the early 1900's.

It has been a boon, the magic of the teardrop, for it brought you here to me didn't it? Now treat yourself to something fantastic and try out the free sample of one of my novels. I hope you enjoy the journey. It will be spectacular. Thanks M.R. Mathias
