5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Bratmobile, August 8, 2000
This review is from: Cold Cold Hearts (Audio CD)
CCH isn't sharper musically than their much more widely acclaimed incarnation Bratmobile, but they are so much funnier. "Omigod she's projectile vomiting all over my vintage car!" That inimitable Valley Grrl voice! I totally adore every moment of this trashy, screechy CD. It's gross and fascinating like a John Waters movie. Buy this CD cuz it's a piece of crazy genius the likes of which you'll never find anywhere else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated classic of late riot grrrl, July 31, 2005

This review is from: Cold Cold Hearts (Audio CD)
By the time this album was released, the riot grrrl hype was long dead, but most of the musicians involved in the scene were still making music- Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17 became Sleater-Kinney, Kathleen Hanna was doing her Julie Ruin project, half of Team Dresch formed the Butchies, and Allison and Erin from Bratmobile joined Katherine (Cutthroats) and Nattles (Cutthroats, the awesome Teenbeat band Flin Flon) to form Cold Cold Hearts. The band cut exactly one seven inch and this full-length, which remains one of my favorites of the genre.

Musically, it doesn't veer much from the Bratmobile formula: surf guitar, low-fi, shrieky Valley Girl Intelligensia lyrics-- but there is a real poppy, hooky girl punk power to this record. Ignore the scenester in-jokes and Olywa references and enjoy snappy gems like "Five Signs: Scorpio" and "State Trooper in the Left Lane Nattles". Highly recommended for fans of the genre, especially younger enthusiasts who might know Le Tigre but haven't discovered some of the less famous feminist punk bands of the 1990's (see also: the Rondelles).

4.0 out of 5 stars fun, March 9, 2005
This review is from: Cold Cold Hearts (Audio CD)
"Cute Boy Discount" alone is worth the price of admission. Sure, they're not for everyone. You already know who you are and you know your musical tastes are different from the mainstream if you're even considering this cd. It's refreshing to think that they will always remain our little secret from the rest of the grossly pop-stuffed top 40 forty ditto heads.
