Cold Moon: the Erotic Haiku of Gabriel Rosenstock, June 23, 2000
This review is from: Cold Moon: The Erotic Haiku of Gabriel Rosenstock (Paperback)
As a published poet, I found this collection to be fascinating. Most of my own writing has been in traditional Japanese verse regarding nature topics, but I never considered erotica as a venue. Rosenstock's talent is prevalent in the collection. Some of his haiku offer non-traditional elements, such as metaphor and simile. Most traditional haiku do not have these literary elements, hence I found this interesting. From an emotional content, I found the collection did satisfy the basic content of the erotica "genre". It was very sensual in many cases, and almost mystical in others. But, I have to say, some of the haiku were graphic. The only reason I did not give this book a five star rating, though, was that many of the haiku failed to show me something terribly interesting or surprising from a literary standpoint. Many were descriptions of erotic acts and erotically emotional images. Still, I was surprised from time to time, and I felt my purchase of the collection was worth the money. For others interested in haiku, I would recommend it as a special treat for latenight reading in the company of your significant other or as a diversion from the usual haiku collections.
