Cold Ridge by Carla Neggers was a real page-turner. I was rather impressed by this writer. This was the first time I had read anything by her and after reading this story, I can tell you it won't be my last !!!

Can she learn to Trust Again?,

Carine had her heart broken bu Tyler North, and due to a hoffifying turn of events it seems he is the only one who can help her and protect her from a killer. Can Carine trust Tyler enough to let him? This is a wonderfully written book that kept me up until 3 AM. I coudln't put it down. The characters are interesting, entertaining and very believable. The novel has a plenty of suspense and romance and keeps its biggest secrets until the end. This is a great read.

Left me rather .. Cold,
By Butterscotch (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cold Ridge (MIRA) (Mass Market Paperback)
This isn't a particularly engaging book. It's not bad, but it's not great either - the book is extremely average in every respect. The characters and their motivations for doing things are not carefully crafted, the murder mystery plot wasn't that interesting, and the romance between the two main characters was weak. I kept waiting for this book to really 'take off,' but it never did. The writing remained stable, but there just wasn't enough action, suspense or romance to make this a great book. The author did her homework in terms of describing the location where the book takes place, and it appears she studied up quite a bit on mountaineering and military terms, but even those descriptions lacked feeling and that engaging quality that good writing evokes. The characters are not ones that you will remember after the book is done, and the writing just isn't strong enough to create visuals and place you alongside the characters. While reading this book, I was reminded of college professors with mundane, uninflected voices that seem to drone on and on. This book, and the writing, was very monotone.

In "Cold Ridge" Carla Neggers completes the story she began in "On The Edge". There Hank Callahn rescued Antonia Winters with the help of his buddy Tyler North. Tyler we learned had dumped Antonia's younger sister, Carine, days before their scheduled wedding. Now Carine may be in trouble after finding the dead body of a coworker at the Rancourt's estate where she has been photographing a huge renovation project. The murder may be tied to the Rancourts or to the chilling incident that brought Tyler and Carine back together a year ago. Will Carine allow Tyler to protect her while they search for the guilty parties? This sequel pulls together all the loose ends in this compelling tale.

I love all of Carla Neggers books! They are intelligent and intriguing, suspensful and romancey all at once. Just my cup of tea.

fine romantic suspense,
This review is from: Cold Ridge (MIRA) (Mass Market Paperback)
Award winning nature photographer Carine Winter strolls along the White Mountains of New Hampshire on the thirtieth anniversary of the death of her parents on COLD RIDGE. Suddenly, shots are fired at her, but seem more of a warning than an effort to kill her. Childhood friend Tyler North, a para-rescue officer sees the attack and helps Carine escape down the mountain. Ty and Carine start seeing one another, fall in love, and become engaged, but he breaks it off one week before the ceremony.Several months later, Carine works in Boston photographing the renovation of a Victorian mansion when she comes across the murdered corpse of security officer Louis Sanborn. The evidence points towards security consultant and Ty's friend Manny Carerra. Calling in a favor, Manny asks Ty to keep Carine out of the unsafe scenario. While Manny goes it alone ignoring his wife and son, Ty and Carine realize they still are in love with one another, but will he tie the knot this time and will she give him a second chance? Readers will question why the original attack team scaring Carine did not kill her, but will remain engrossed in the action of the tale. The initial romance between Ty and Carine is glossed over except in flashback references as ancient history but the love between the lead couple seems real. The story line is exciting and never lets up until the killer is identified. Fans will also wonder if they survive, will the hero walk down the aisle this time, but to know the answer requires reading the novel. Harriet Klausner

By-the-numbers romantic suspense, with little plot.,
This review is from: Cold Ridge (MIRA) (Mass Market Paperback)
Cold Ridge concerns nature photographer Carine Winters discovering a dead body in the home she's photographing, and the conspiracy she gets caught up in as a result. Well, it's not really much of a conspiracy considering that at least 70% of the novel is Carine and her protector Tyler North analysing the break-up of their relationship (he cancelled their wedding a week before it was due to go ahead) over and over again.
In fact, if the character of Manny Carrera had spilled the beans from the get-go, there wouldn't be a book at all. He had absolutely no reason to remain silent the way he did. All he achieved was nearly getting his family killed. The only reason for his silence is to ensure that the author can find some convulated way of getting her two main characters together (Manny is the one who asks Tyler to protect Carine - for no discernible reason) and whack us over the head with 200 odd pages of their romantic angst. Not exactly compelling. I read the book quite quickly, wasn't terribly bored with it, and thought the climax was effectively done, but I've found more plot complications in pre-teen thrillers. Since I've given far better books than this just two stars, I'm giving this only one star (though it probably deserves one-and-a-half).

An excellent summer read!,

This book is a follow-up to a story in a 3-in-1 book. This one follows the story of Carine Winters, sister of Antonia Winters. Carine finds a dead body and has to rely on Ty North to protect her. Ty North is the only man she has ever loved and he left her at the altar 9 months earlier. Now he is back and they try to figure out whodunnit while also trying to figure out where they stand with one another.I definitely enjoyed this book- the romance was great and the action was thick. I just thought there were too many plots going on at once and it took away from the overall tone of the book. Still, a great read...especially if you read the first one and are a fan of strong characters, love a whodunnit and are a sucker for romance!

An Okay Read,

This book left me both wanting more and wanting less. I wanted more character development. I didn't feel connected to them at all and their motivations were often unclear. Carine, the female lead, was described as this independent, strong willed woman, yet her behavior and actions often said the opposite. The plot was interesting but slow and none of the action - suspense or romance - had enough substance to really hold my interest.
What I wanted less of was the unnecessary description. We're given pages of information on the scenery. We're given lots of detail on the process of becoming a pararescuer and the required skills. None of this was particularly fascinating to me and it often repeated throughout the book. The characters inner thoughts are often repeated as well, as they continually contemplate each other and the issues around them. Overall, this is a good read, though easily forgettable.

Couldn't get into it,

This review is from: Cold Ridge (Mass Market Paperback)
Set in Cold Ridge, New Hampshire, Carine Winters is 33, a photographer. Her parents died when she was three and she, her brother and sister were raised by their uncle.
Carine has known Tyler North all her life. Ty's single mom was eccentric and not close with anyone. After her death Ty inherited her land and trust fund. He's an Air Force pararescuer. When Carine unknowingly interrupts a smuggling operation, Ty helps save her. They fell for each other and planned to marry. A week before the wedding Ty backed out. Meanwhile, one of the smugglers plans revenge on Carine and just about everybody she knows. One of Ty's pararescuer pals is suspected of murder, the pal's son is threatened, the pal's wife is a crybaby breakdown-waiting-to-happen, Carine's sister's husband is a senator, Uncle Gus has a lazy dog . . . this story was a disjointed, convoluted mess. The characters were not likeable and didn't make sense. I didn't know it was a sequel; just picked it up and started reading. Maybe reading the first book would have made a difference. I read as much as I could and skimmed the rest. |
