Product Description

Essentially, a Buckler is a small shield about the size of a large dinner plate. It often accompanied a swordsman as an aid in defense. The Cold Steel training replica is stoutly made and has a thick, sturdy, raised boss to protect the hand, and a rugged handle that will withstand plenty hard of use. Always wear eye protection and appropriate equipment when training. Not for use when training against metal weapons.

this little guy is just awesome. Its so solidly built, out of such tuff material that I've no doubt it'll stand up for as long as my arm can hold it. I bought several of the sword trainers from cold steel as well, and would recommend only useing other polypropelyne weapons against it for the longest life. NEVER USE A REAL METAL SWORD AGAINST THIS!!

Paired with the cold steel medieval wiaster one handed sword, you're really ready to start learning the art of sword and buckler fighting, which if you don't have a teacher to show you can be learned from 'Medieval Art of Sword & Shield: The Combat System of Royal Armouries MS I.33.'

Most of the bad reviewws of this product were by people who didn't know what a buckler shield was, or didn't read the product discription.

Update: Ever had someone swing at you while you try to block with a sowrd? Getting the blade around can be difficult, and you need to read them correctly. Defending yourself with this buckler shield is far simpler then it seems it should be. The shock of each blow is barely notcieable, and the most difficult part of long training with it has been the strength of holding it up for long periods of time. The dome portion of the shield seems to move the force off to the side. The ease of getting your sheild into an adaquate blocking position for any stroke was almost intuitive for our entire group, men and women included, it was almsot instinctual. You should never swing full contact with intent to hit your sparring partners, especially when not wearing padded armor, but we soon found ourselves doing just that, and we just couldn't get past this without doing something more unexpected then the basic strokes.

This is a very durable and well-constructed shield. Its small size makes it easy to carry around and throw into the car. I'm new to wielding the buckler. I've used shields before, but I'm accustomed to it being much larger and heavier. The way you hold this shield is very different. I'm used to having a secondary strap attached to my forearm while the hand grips the bar close to the rim of the shield. The handle is smack-dab in the middle of this one, so using it is a very different experience than with larger shields. It is better for offensive use or for swift ripostes rather than blocking. It is because it's so small, and has such a round bulging surface - it's designed to quickly bounce off and deflect the blow rather than to just stand there and absorb the full impact as you would with a larger shield.

Even though this shield is so small and seemingly simple to use, it has taken me some time to get use to holding it directly in front of me, as well having to punch or smack to deflect . It's weird not having it braced to my forearm to block in a side-stance like I'm accustomed to. The buckler can be tilted to line up the rim of the shield with your arm, but it's an awkward grip, and obviously leaves most of your arm from your elbow up to your shoulder exposed. It isn't as effective as a larger shield for punching with the rim specifically, but it is possible, and certainly quicker to use with an uppercut technique.

As I said, it's more like an off-hand weapon in its own right. It's very easy to bash and pummel with, but requires speed and coordination to block and parry with effectively.

I do really wish Cold Steel would develop a larger Polycarbonate shield. I would buy it in instant, even if it was twice the price of this one.

I am an avid Western Martial Arts practitioner, and I am impressed. Having made several synthetic bucklers in the past, I find the weight, proportions and feel of this shield to be quite comparable to my others. I personally prefer a somewhat smaller boss, but for someone w/ a large hand & wearing a glove, it is excellent. The material is 1/2" thick & very robust. Weight is just a smidge over 2 lbs. and the oval shaped handle feels nice in the hand. Excellent for use w/ synthetic or wooden weapons. Great item for the price!

This was exactly what I expected from a company like cold steel...light durable...perfect for sparring. Hasn't started showing too much wear even though its been used almost daily for a month

With the advent of quality synthetic wasters that can be used at speed with minimal protection, I've been surprised that a product like this took so long to develop. As a person who trains sword & buckler using a mix of sources, I was immediately impressed with the weight and feel of this buckler. It is clearly going to last for some time. I like it so much, in fact, that I am purchasing another to use as a loaner when drilling/sparring with synthetic wasters. It's also nice that Cold Steel has some warnings on the inside of the rim about not being responsible for injuries and (the obvious) that this buckler is not meant to be used against steel weapons.

I did notice some mixed reviews that seem rooted in a sense of the buckler as something other than what a HEMA practitioner would expect (too small, etc.). If you are practicing historical European martial arts, this piece of gear is a must have. If you are expecting something else, maybe do a little research first so you know what you're buying before posting negative reviews.
