Product Description

The Espada was designed by custom knife maker Andrew Demko and Cold Steel President Lynn C. Thompson. Their goal was to harness old world craftsmanship with new world advancements in mechanics and materials to create a new series of tactical folders for today's Conquistadors. Like the swords of old the Espada's are not for the weak, timid, faint of heart or those desiring another spring assisted play toy. Just pick one up and you'll see what we mean! Definitely not politically correct, they are huge yet surprisingly well balanced and feature dramatically upswept clip point blades that are ideal for cutting, slashing and piercing. Made from vacuum heat-treated and sub-zero quenched Japanese 8A stainless steel and hollow ground to a thin, razor sharp edge, they will cleave through just about any obstacle or target in their path. To make your hand the real master of these awesome blades we have paired them with state of the art pistol grip handles. Strongly curved and equipped with multiple finger grooves and even a sub-hilt in the two larger models, they work perfectly in either a forward or reverse grip while offering unprecedented retention and reach through multiple grip extension options. To minimize overall weight and maximize strength and rigidity, we have CNC machined the frames and integral bolsters of the Espada's handles from 7075 Aluminum billets. While quite costly, this material rivals even Titanium in strength and can endure years of the hardest abuse. Finally to make the handle as beautiful as it is effective and strong, we have mirror polished the dovetailed bolsters and attached glossy black G-10 handle scales using the latest high tech fasteners. We don't believe any tactical folder can make a credible claim to being a "pocket sword" without possessing an incredibly strong and reliable lock and the Espada's are no exception. That's why we have equipped each model with our new multi-patented Tri-Ad lock.

This review is for the Extra Large variant.

1: It's absolutely gorgeous, from every angle.
2: It's absolutely functional in it's intended purpose.
3: It's freakin' intimidating on every level.
4: Quality, quality, quality.

Okay, so if you desire the highest quality knife in this category, this is your knife. The lockup is Herculean. The blade itself, is a masterpiece. The steel, grind, and scary sharp edge remind you why you paid what u did for this knife. I found it for 265.00.

I've carried this blade comfortably in a pair of jeans all day on many occasions. My local laws permit folders of any size. Please be mindful of yours. The aesthetics of the design are sublime. The choices of grip are numerous. One hand high, one hand low, two hands, reversed if desired--wow. I can hold this in a defensive position high or low. And unbelievably, I can fit my two full hands on this handle comfortably if so desired. The cutting power is immeasurable in that scenario. The tri-ad lock is amongst the strongest I've ever actuated. I didn't find it difficult to release the blade, but as the other reviews state, it could be a bit difficult if you have a weak thumb.

This knife is surprisingly light for it's size, which makes it tolerable for EDC if necessary. The weight also gives it a surprising dexterity you wouldn't expect. The clip is perfection and thumb ramp deploys this blade faster than a switchblade with practice. Wanna see intimidating? Deploy this knife catching it on the Emerson thumb ramp. I would definitely practice the technique. But the end result is the blade upon presentation is so overwhelming, the assailant will second guess his intentions...unless he's a bonafide samurai.

Size Name: Large
Cold Steel sells this as a folding pocket sword (Espada is Spanish for sword) with a very politically (and likely historically) incorrect tale of soldiers from Spain conquering the "new world" as the inspiration for this knife. The truth is that is knife, the large and extra large, are more apt to be called a pocket Bowie. It has a great Bowie shape to the blade, and a very nice pistol grip for a handle. The smallest one, the medium, is a full size knife. The large is the best of the three however, as it not only has a 5.5 inch blade, but the handle is the perfect size for a pocket Bowie. It has more room for differing grips to get more done. Although I thought about picking up the extra large, that is just too big of a knife to be realistic. Any folding knife that you can easily grip with 2 hands is too big for me.

The best part of this knife is likely the Cold Steel Tri-Ad Lock. It is, in my opinion, the best lock on the market. With a knife of this size, lets face it the large blade is a lot of metal, this knife needs a strong lock and I am very impressed with the lock it has.

If you are looking for an impressive averaged size knife to show off to friends, look no further than the Espada medium. If you want the maximum knife for your money, well made and with a classic bowie design get the Espada large. If you just want to go crazy and turn heads with more pocket knife than you'll likely ever need get the Espada extra large. But, before you get the extra large, I recommend you check out the Cold Steel Rajah II. It is much less and more usable, in my opinion.

OK. First let me say, there is no good reason anyone should feel a need to own a knife like this. This thing is absurd. I'm a really big guy, (6'2" 300lbs) and this thing makes me look like a big baby holding a short sword. Even folded this thing looks ridiculous. And its awesome. In spite of its gargantuan size, it is surprisingly light weight, but not cheap feeling light weight. As I sit here holding it, I find it hard to describe. Whatever you think its going to be when you read light weight, nope its even lighter!

When I pulled it out of the box, I thought, no way this f'ing thing is going to fit in my pocket, but to my pleasant surprise, it fits perfectly. Here is where that light weight is so important, I feel like I could put this thing in a bathing suit pocket and not have it yanking my bathing suit down. Incredible!

Pay attention to the warning sticker on this thing - that should not be ignored. This thing is S C A R Y sharp. Like Hattori Hanso Kill Bill samurai sword that could cut god himself sharp. I have always found that Cold Steel knives come shave sharp right out of the box, this makes the rest of them seem dull.

I just can't get over this thing. If Crocodile Dundee pulled his bowie knife on you, you could justifiable exclaim, "that's not a knife..." as you unleash this atom splitting monstrosity. Look, I said at the beginning, there is no good reason to own this knife. It is not practical, it is extremely dangerous for a novice, and frankly, if you are not super careful closing this folder, its gonna take a finger or four off if you close it on yourself.

But if you got a couple hundred bucks burning a hole in your pocket, its a lot of fun. Its a hell of a show piece.
