I have been collecting COLD STEEL items for just a little over a year now, I was happy to locate this style of machete as it is no longer in production. The SAX is a design that is quite old, it came from Northern Europe, from people that we refer to as Vikings. The first thing I did when I received it was to remove the black coating from the edge & sharpen it (it had an edge but just enough to slice through warm butter). It is heavier that other 18" machetes that CS offers, it took a few minutes to get used to this design but I took it to an old 4x4 & a 6" thick oak log, it did it's job quite well, better than the regular style machetes, the handle is quite comfortable and if you let the tool do the work you should not have any blisters or aches. The sheath is not great but on the other hand it is better than most and should be durable. I was a skeptic about the design but now I am quite fond of it. If you can find one (this site may still have some)I would recommend it for your next adventure in the wild outdoors or your backyard & let's not forget that it is one GREAT value for your dollar! Specially in today's financial climate!

I bought the cold steel sax machete with the 12 inch blade mostly out if curiosity. I have used this item on chores around the house, on camping trips and once on a weekend survival training course. This item is simply awesome, reliable and durable.

Because of my profoundly positive experiences with this item, I bought the sax machete with the 18 inch blade....both items are impressive.

The sax machete with The 12 inch blade has earned a permanent place in my outdoors gear.

I first bought the sax machete with the 12 inch blade. I was impressed enough with that item to purchase the sax machete with the 18 inch blade.

The extra 6 inches adds greatly to this item. It is very effective at chopping brush and clearing tall weeds and undergrowth. The typical duties for a machete are fun when using the cold steel sax. It arrived with a reasonably sharp blade, that I then honed to an even higher level. That sax machete holds an edge, even with continuos usage. Saplings, up to an inch in diameter are just lopped off with one modest swing, larger branches fall to additional hacks, as the blade takes big bites with not very much effort. The balance and feel of the machete exceeded my expectations. The handle is none slip and very comfortable during prolonged use of the item.

The sheath is very durable and holds the machete snugly, yet the machete easily glides out when needed. The rivets at the mouth of the sheath serve to protect the sheath material from damage as the blade is drawn.

This is a durable product that will last for many many years.

If you are looking for a good quality machete, the sax machete with the 18 inch blade should be at the top of your list.

I bought this because it's cheap and it was based off a viking long seax, which I've wanted for a while now. I got it basically so I could strip it down and then make it look more like it's historical muse. I took it through it's paces before I began work on it though and it held up quite well the only damage is from a screw that was in a 2x4 I was cutting and that is minor, the screw actually snapped in half when I hit it. The dent in the blade was removed with a few passes of a file and the blade is good as new I'm thinking about getting another to customize and keep this one as my beater, pretty cool machete if you ask me

Ive caried a machete when Im out doors for a long time and had to replace my old one. Im a big cold steel fan and have been happy with all the products I own from them. This machete goes threw wood like a good hatchet better in some way, I see myself useing this tool for years to come.

I ordered the 12" model, and sure enough that's what came in the mail. It comes pretty much as described, no question about that. The sax does not come sharpened, so some time was needed with the old whetstone. No big deal there. The main concern is the weight! It's almost more of a cleaver than a knife. As another reviewer noted, the tip is rounded, not angled off and beveled. Still, it seems to do the trick!

For the longest time I thought my Gerber Machete was the best one I owned. Im an avid weapons collecter and fanatic, so when I layed my eyes on the 18 in. Sax I knew i had to buy it. I got it fast and in good condition, there was a few stamp knicks and tiny flaws in the blade, but it came sharp. I went into the local woods and i could pretty much cleave thru anything that was three inches in diameter or less, its got great wieght which powers it through almost anything. After about 100 swings i felt alittle fatigued. But the beast of a machete can power through pretty much anything if you give it a good sharpening. Also kept its edge very well. I highly recomend this Machete!

3mm is a good thickness for a heavy duty chopper, the sweet spot is a bit far back as expected given the shape, having a bit more of a hatchet feel, but with a better digging and fine work potential in the tip. The handle design is a proven classic, but I am not caring for the checkered rubber material. It is surprisingly slippery when sweaty. I removed the handle to reshape and replace it with beech and am pleased at the full tang configuration with 4 reasonable sized screw holes. Good sheath as well. A good value, and easily modified.
