The modern warrior's knife,
By
This review is from: Cold Steel Master Tanto Knife Kraton Handle (Leather Sheath) (Sports)
The Tanto was used in Japan for various purposes such as fighting and utility. Given the design of the tip, it's main purpose is to penetrate body armor (whether that's a Samurai's body armor, a makeshift shield or a modern day vest worn by a perpetrator). Given the emphasis on tip strength, the Tanto is not as effective for cutting. However, the design of the Cold Steel Tanto facilitates cutting and slicing just fine.
The Tanto has been a formidable knife and this smaller design (6" blade) from Cold Steel sets the bar high. It is composed of San Mai III VG-1 Steel. San Mai Steel is a sandwich of hard, high carbon steel in the center between two softer, lower carbon steel sides. This design gives this knife strength and flexibility. The lamination line is visible just above the edge of the blade. This beefy brute is 3/16 of an inch thick. The resistance to rust, bending or losing the tip is superior to other Tanto's available. It is a Japanese styled knife, meaning it has the influence of the Japanese version of the Tanto. However, it has sharper lines, thicker spine, and more angles when compared to the traditional knife. This is a blade-heavy knife with a guard to protect its user from having his or her hand slip into the blade. The 5.5" Kraton handle is a matte black rubber which is not only durable but also non-slip for total control. There is a tapered pommel on the end of the grip with a hole to accommodate a lanyard. The heavy weight (9.5 ounces) makes this one of the most effective knives for fighting and utility. This is truly a high quality knife with the 6" blade (11.5" overall length). Pictures do not do this knife justice. It is truly a formidable weapon/utility knife. I would suggest they create an updated version of their whole line of Tantos to include serrations. This would make a great knife for escaping out of a vehicle (serrations to cut seat belts and the pommel to break auto glass). A leather sheath comes with this knife which is quite thick and durable. It is relatively resistant to light scratches. The sheath only allows vertical carry on a belt. The snap is well designed allowing for an easy draw. You have to be careful drawing and reholstering this knife, unless you want a flank steak (of your own flesh). One negative, which I consider minor, is that on the secondary market, this knife has a lower resale value. Why? It has to do with the Outlandish website and demonstrations that are more comical, than practical. If they change their marketing towards the true benefits of their knives, and provide a lifetime warranty, I can see their reputation change 180 degrees. Given that the prices are not selling for MSRP, online, this knife makes a good value. It's truly solid, durable, sharp and handy.
