5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money- a great product
This product lived up to what I had read about it during my product research. One of the key things I was looking for was a waster that weighed and handled like a true medieval sword but that was more durable than a wooden sword and wouldn't splinter when it broke. I found it to be balanced and extremely sturdy while approximating the shape and form of a medieval sword...

Tough? Yes. Solid? Yes. Balanced? No. Feel like a real blade? Nope.

The feel of this is more like a club than a blade. The weight of a sword is a balance between the size and shape of the blade and the size of the pommel, due to the design and material of this waister, it falls short. The blade on this is very thick (thicker than the hilt), which...

This product lived up to what I had read about it during my product research. One of the key things I was looking for was a waster that weighed and handled like a true medieval sword but that was more durable than a wooden sword and wouldn't splinter when it broke. I found it to be balanced and extremely sturdy while approximating the shape and form of a medieval sword and well suited for training. I expect to get a great deal of use out of it in the coming days.

James Robertson

4.0 out of 5 stars worth the money, December 28, 2010

I received a pair of these from my wife for a Yule gift and am happy with them. As the others said, a bit heavier than expected but still nice and solid. They do take a beating and survive well.
My one concern is the point. I don't like the points for wasters as it makes thrusting dangerous, even with protection. I simply blunted the points of mine by whittling them down somewhat.
Well done Cold Steel.

First thing I did with this is pulled it out of the box and beat a tree with it. Not a single scratch and the tree has dents in it. Remarkable durability.

First off, these things are nearly indestructible. Unless you're sparring against a chop saw or flamethrower... Haha. Being made of polypropylene it does have a tendency to warp if left in hot places or if exposed to lots of sunlight. To reduce the chance of warping during shipping, spring for the expedited shipping. It's worth it. :) It's a little shorter overall than the hand and a half sword, but both products are great sparring tools. A little heavier than expected, though, so if you have the arm of a four year-old, you're in trouble. Haha.

Tough? Yes. Solid? Yes. Balanced? No. Feel like a real blade? Nope.

The feel of this is more like a club than a blade. The weight of a sword is a balance between the size and shape of the blade and the size of the pommel, due to the design and material of this waister, it falls short. The blade on this is very thick (thicker than the hilt), which affects the speed of the swing. Due to the balance being too far forward, the sword is not nearly as responsive as live steal. The sword is 39 inches from tip to pommel. The balance point is at 16" from pommel, it should be closer to 10".

Due to the weight of these I would not spar with them. These are not light and flexible like shinai. These are solid with next to no give.

With all that said, what good are these? Strength and stamina building as well as working the pell. This does seem to very durable. At approx 30$ it a nice cheap alternative to a real steel practice sword.

This tough guy is almost as heavy as Cold Steel's hand and a half training sword! It is VERY sturdy due to it's thick blade. The weight (which can be a good thing depending on what you're using it for) is a factor when considering buying this. I'm glad I bought mine!

This is one bad boy sword - Yes, it's plastic. Yes, it will hurt you if you hit yourself with it. If you're looking to pick up sword play in the near future, do yourself a favor and snatch up one of these. It's a little heavier than a real steel blade, but it's better than cutting your arm off, right? Practice with this until you're ready for the real steel.

I bought a pair of these for practice, to save the steel from wear and tear. (We have to file down any nicks to prevent tearing skin and surcoats as much, so repeated filing can wear away at good steel.) Using these, we are able to train without restraint with weapons that move, weigh and balance exactly like our real swords. They are durable and even attractive enough for martial arts demos if you lie. At this price, it was a no-brainer purchase to get a pair so we could both practice right away. I recommend these for anyone doing Western Martial arts.

As an afterthought, LARPS that don't use live steel could do a lot worse for weapons...

I was a bit skeptical upon ordering this weapon (and the dagger I bought with it), as I had only used traditional wooden bokken in the past. However, I was very pleasantly surprised at how solid a product it is. While it is indeed heavier than you might expect, this works very nicely for honing forearm muscles during training, in fact some of my real swords seem light now in comparison!

While I haven't put it through real durability tests, I can almost guarantee that it will stand up to almost anything, as the other reviewers have said. Maybe some people might have criticisms about it, but this sword works perfectly for my purposes so I give it five stars, great product!

I just got in the sword today and have given it my usual tests like smacking it on my pell at full speed banging it on my 12 gauge helm and not even a scratch, this thing is great, if I could I would ditch my rotan sword for it but I don't think the SCA would let me fight with this cool sword
